The 2009 tournament starts this weekend with the following fixtures.

Saturday

1500  England v Italy
1700  Ireland  v France

Sunday

1500 Scotland v Wales

In the 6 Nations of 2007 & 2008 and the RWC of 2007 this feature has made a profit of around 50 POINTS on each occasion and the aim this time is again to produce a profit of 50 POINTS+.

I expect home wins on Saturday and an away win on Sunday.

England should prove too strong for Italy but the conservative selection(Goode/Ellis) by Johnson should ensure a dull grinding victory. In Dublin the wintry conditions will favour the home team with "les bleus" hating every minute. On Sunday Wales(without "glamour boy Henson") should prove too strong for Scotland(poorly selected why no Thom Evans?).

So to bet !

All prices /handicaps are generally available unless a particular bookie  is specifically stated(maximum bet = 10POINTS).

Italy ( +15) -   2 POINTS win @ evens
Ireland(-3)  -   4 POINTSwin  @ evens
Wales (-5)   -   4 POINTSwin  @ evens.

Then Ireland and Wales in a 3POINT handicap double.

That's this weekend taken care of then so to the "specials" which you may have to shop around for but you will find on Oddschecker.

Top tournament points scorer - J Hook (Wales) 2POINTS win @ 12/1
Top tournament tryscorer - L.Halfpenny(Wales) 1 POINT EW @ 14/1(1/4 odds 1,2,3,4)
Top England tryscorer - P.Sackey 7 POINTS win @ 3/1
Top Scotland tryscorer - B.Cairns 2POINTS win @ 10/1
Top Ireland tryscorer - J Flannery1 POINT EW @ 50/1
Italy to win 0 matches (6/5 PPower,11/10 Lads) - 10 POINTSwin
Scotland to finish 5th - 6 POINTS win @ 6/4
Wales to win Grand Slam -2 POINTS win @ 11/2

My predicted finishing order is 1.Wales2.Ireland3.England4.France5.Scotland6.Italy

Running total = -46POINTS

Think the weather may turn the games this weekend into rather dour affairs so don't expect freeflowing spectaculars.

Any queries please feel free to pm me or I'm happy to discuss on open forum.

A pleasing enough start last weekend with 13 POINTS invested and 28POINTS returned giving a running total of

-18POINTS

This weekend we have
Saturday

1500 France v Scotland
1730 Wales v England

Sunday

1430 Italy v Ireland

On Saturday expect 2 home wins and an away win on Sunday(anyone see a pattern emerging here?).

Briefly Hadden has become more adventurous(as I urged last weekend) and I think Johnson is trying to bore the Welsh to sleep by slowing the game down and Goode kicking England to a narrow victory.Sunday should see Ireland far too strong for Italy although Ireland shouldn't expect the presents that England received via Mallett/Bergamasco.

So let's applaud and support enterprise and hope flair triumphs over pragmatism.

Scotland (+15) - 2POINTS win at evens
Wales  (-10)    -  3POINTS win at evens

Ireland (-13)    -  5POINTS win at evens

Then 2POINTS win handicap double on Wales & Ireland

Running total =  -30POINTS

Was hoping to put up some more interesting small punts e.g. total match points/tryscorers/margins etc but short of time today so will stick to the basics. Will try(sic) to do so for next round of matches.

Good luck & enjoy.

Weekend washup!

12 POINTS invested and 14POINTS returned so running total

-16POINTS

Helpfully Halfpenny scored another try and Sackey opened his account.

A break next weekend before a very decisive weekend for this column starting on the Friday evening (27th) @ 2000hrs  when France host Wales.

Hello

It's weekend 3 of the 2009 6 Nations with the following fixtures:-

FRIDAY

2000hrs   France v Wales

SATURDAY

1500 hrs  Scotland v Italy
1730 hrs  Ireland v England

This will be a defining weekend for this feature and the aim of making +50 POINTS over the tournament. So will we see the pattern of home wins on a Saturday and an away win in the other match?I think so!

In Paris a jaded France host a well-rested and confident looking Wales. On current form I would expect Wales to win this 4 times out of 5.So will this be the exception?France have injury problems and 9 of their squad were involved in a bruising club encounter only 5 days ago.So Wales to win well as France tire late on in the game.

Murrayfield plays host to the wooden spoon decider and a turgid affair is expected.Italy have not impressed this campaign so Scotland to win comfortably in a dull game.

At Croke Park a high-octane close match is anticipated with the unbeaten Ireland entertaining an improving England.I expect a  close game and can  just envisage Ronan o'Gara dropping a goal for Ireland in the last minute to seal a win for Ireland and propel them to a Grand Slam decider with Wales.

So

Wales (-2)  8POINTS win at evens.
Scotland(-9) 5POINTSwin at evens
England(+7) 3POINTSwin at evens

Specials
Our pre-tournament specials are mostly still in play and looking hopeful. So will suggest a few "fun" bets to spice up this weekend's viewing.

All these bets are 1 POINT win

Wales to win by 11-15 - 7/1
Scotland to win by 6-10 - 5/1
Ireland to win by 1-5 - 11/2
No tryscorer in Scotland v Italy match - 20/1
Under 38 points scored in Scotland game - evens
Under 40 points scored in Ireland game - evens.

Total invested is 22points giving a running total of
-38 POINTS

Good luck.

Sunday review.

22 POINTS invested this week and 26.5 POINTS returned giving a running total of:-

-11.5POINTS

For the 3rd weekend in a row we made a profit albeit a modest one.But the critical match at Murrayfield went as anticipated so the "Specials" are now starting to look promising.

Another break next weekend before consecutive weekends see the conclusion of the 2009 6 Nations. Can we hit our target of + 50 POINTS?

Very briefly this weekend

Wales ( -17)  5 POINTS win
Ireland ( -6)    2 POINTS win
England (scratch) 2 POINTS win

Then 1 POINT win treble

Running total -21.5POINTS

A lot more next weekend!

Good luck

Am adding a further bet for France to win the 6 Nations which must be placed before the match tomorrow.

They are hugely overpriced at 14/1(generally available) and 1 POINT win is advised.

Running total now -22.5 POINTS

11 POINTS invested this weekend and only 8 returned giving the first losing weekend and a running total of..........

-14.5POINTS

Some serious work to be done then to hit our target of + 50.

All 3 matches are next Saturday climaxing in the Championship decider between Wales & Ireland at 1730 hrs.

Thoughts/bets advised by latest Friday.

The final weekend of the 2009 6 Nations has all 3 matches on Saturday fittingly climaxing with Wales hosting Ireland.

1315 - Italy v France
1530 - England v Scotland
1730 - Wales v Ireland.

As we know any wagers involving France are a little like doing the national lottery so will keep stakes low.England buoyed by the emphatic win last week should be too strong for the Scots who still lack a cutting edge behind the scrum. So Enland to win comfortably then.

In Cardiff both sides can win the title but for Wales to do so they must beat Ireland by 13 points or more.I think it is beyond Wales and their title hopes were scuppered by an inept performance in Rome last week. However I think Wales will win the match(by less than 13) to secure the Triple Crown and deny Ireland a Grand Slam too. The Ireland consolation will be the title.

So much for the blarney...............

France (-14) -   2 POINTS win @ 10/11
England(-12) -  4 POINTSwin @ evens
Wales  ( -2)  -   4 POINTS win @ 10/11

Then 3 POINT win handicap double on England & Wales.

As it's the final weekend will add some "specials " to enliven the games.

In Rome - 0ver 42.5 match points 2 POINTS win @ 5/6
Twickenham - Nick Easter to score 1st try 1 POINT @ 25/1
                    Ricky Fluetey anytime tryscorer  1 POINT@ 7/2
Cardiff - Shane Williams 1st tryscorer2 POINTS@ 10/1 (Sid James!)
             Gavin"Orange" Henson  last tryscorer1 POINT @ 18/1

Total points this week = 20

Running total is - 34.5 POINTS

Good luck and enjoy .

The 6 Nations concluded dramatically on Saturday evening with an Ireland Grand Slam - their first for 61 years and well deserved.

If generous with the fractions can just about claim another winning weekend with 20 POINTS invested and 20.5POINTS returned giving a running total of -14 POINTS.

BUT by taking the winning specials from week 1 into account (Italy & Scotland) we can add a further 38POINTS giving a total for the 5 weeks of...

+24POINTS

Clearly not the 50 POINTS I wanted but still a profit again.

Thank you to all who read this feature and I hope you got something out of it.

That's all for now folks
