Is Gordon Brown right to say Britain should not walk away from Afghanistan.
Todays serious issue question.

Personally I think they should stay there ....   If the allies were to withdraw then the Afghan / Pakistan border region would just become a massive trg area for al Queda

I am of the opinion that us being there does reduce the risk of Al Queda carrying out their campaign in our cities..

It will not completely nullify the risk but as I say it certainly will curtail them.

I didnt agree with the Iraq conflict but I have to say I did agree with this one.

Cheers

I certainly wouldn't let an Afghan policeman get in the position where he's the only person with a firearm amongst a bunch of British troops again though, that's for sure.

I think that one of the factors that is keeping us in Afghanistan, which hasn't been mentioned yet, and which would justify it for me, anyway, is that Pakistan has nuclear weapons. Disregarding whether or not Afghanistan/Pakistan is being used as a training base for terrorists and a refuge for them as well, imagine what might happen if Pakistan implodes, there's a free-for-all and Al Qaeda or any other terrorist/bandit organisation got their hands on them......

Thanks, but no thanks. I don't necessarily agree that the strategy and tactics being used in this war are the right ones for the situation, but I can see that something has to be done.

The soldiers would have had their weapons with them, however they may have been caught off guard by the mere fact that the culprit was a policeman and he would have gained a certain amount of trust with the soldiers.

Having said that I expect that in future they will be cautious at all times.

Sort of this.

But Al-Qaeda are already in Pakistan, hence the recent wave of attacks in response to the military action in the badlands there.

If there was ever an example of "those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it", it's Afghanistan.
