Quote:
O'BRIEN AIMING FOR YEATS GOLD

Aidan O'Brien is hoping Yeats can leave his disappointing seasonal reappearance run at Navan well behind him as he bids for an unprecedented fourth Gold Cup at Royal Ascot.

The eight-year-old finished a distant sixth on his comeback run in the Vintage Crop Stakes in April but O'Brien expects a much better showing at his spiritual home.

"He's well at the moment. Obviously he's a year older and a year wiser than he was last year and than every year that he was before," O'Brien told At The Races.

"He's fine, we are happy with him so far but like I said, he is older and wiser and he minds himself.

"He's a marvellous horse and he's one of those that you sit back in a morning and look at him because he is such a unique horse.

"We are happy with him. Obviously his first run this year was disappointing but it was in bad ground. We are hoping to get him back at Ascot and seeing him run.

"It was very soft at Navan and very early in the year. It wasn't a fast-run race, they went steady and then quickened. He had been away a few times but he was still very relaxed before that.

"To have him in top gear at that time of the year would have made it hard to get him to peak again at Ascot, so we think he has come forward since then.

"I wouldn't read too much into it and hopefully he will leave that well behind him."

I was looking in wikipedia at this race and it looks like no eight year old has won this race since 1950, so if you're a stats man you can kiss Yeats and Geordieland goodbye.

Have many 8 year olds tried to win?  Surely not too many.  Have any tried who have won it 3 times already?

I went back to 2000 and there were about 6 different horse who ran in the race, some multiple times at 8+ years. So it is a small percentage of older horses who try. Now we have a situation where the first two in the betting are 8yo's.

The only other horse to have won the gold cup three times is Sagaro and that was in the 70s and he was retired after his third win.

This is a tricky race to bet on this year

Its not tricky at all, its full of non stayers, and listed horses who will not be good enough. Yeats needs to be at this best, which is very questionable after his first, even though Aiden said you can forget it. Geordieland's run last time is rock solid, hes in the form of his life, and the money is down, its a no brainer in my opinion.

Does Geordieland stay?

I suppose if you count a 1 1/2 length second to Yeats and a 5 length second to Yeats in this race you would have to say he has stayed, and very well. Just beaten by a horse at the top of his game.

That horse has not had an ideal Prep, where are Geordieland has.

I would make Yeats a huge lay, and I will be doing just that, his price of 9/4 is laughable.

bit harsh, david always says with conviction what he thinks and always says BEFORE the race what he is backing and why. getting one wrong hardly merits p1ss taking.

much better to encourage strong opinions on here than mock them - see the recent departure of several respected members for proof...

I agree Owl, I joined this forum primarily because of the racing, and I rarely come onto the the racing board any more because of the constant bitching.

Chill out lads.

Without a little bit of ribbing life would be no fun at all.

There was nothing malicious in my comment.

Wonderful performance & I don't think that record will ever be broken.

Took almost 30 years for a horse to win it 3 times let alone 4!
