NI rider is killed during event
One of Northern Ireland's leading equestrian riders has been killed in a cross-country event.

Sherelle Duke, 28, from Portadown, died when her horse toppled on her at Brockenhurst Park, near Southampton.

She is a former World Young Rider Champion and also won a team bronze in that event in 1999.

Equestrian journalist Ruth Loney, who knew Ms Duke, said she was a "super fit athlete", who was "bubbly but totally focused".

"This tragic accident has cast a real cloud over the equestrian world and everyone who knew her," Ms Loney said.

She said that the cross-country section of three-day eventing was a dangerous sport.

"It is solid timber fences, so when a horse hits them it comes down straight away and the rider doesn't have as much chance to be thrown clear.

"Whereas in national hunt racing when a jockey is thrown they're going at speed over smaller fences and the jockey will be thrown clear," she said.

She said two other Irish riders had been killed in similar circumstances in recent years.

Sherelle Duke's family are well known in the Portadown area and in the business world after setting-up the Dukes Transport Company.

For years Sherelle rode in the company's colours of red and white.

Ms Duke was a member of the Irish team in the 2003 European Championships.

I don't want to be rude but why do you keep posting about people who have died

Its news, and this one is also horse related.

Unfortunately in the world we live in the news consists of death and bad things. When I find a fun and happy story I do post them. But sadly that isn't often.

Thankfully it isn't something that happens too often. Does make you appreciate the people who risk their lives for their sport. Its not like Footballers have the same perils.

Yes.

But very few thankfully and god forbid if and when it happens I will post that up too. Like I have about Bobby Robson in the football section.

Working with animals that are unpredictable and weigh as much as horses do is inherently more dangerous. As footballers who have died tend to do so because of a medical problem.

I read in Horse & Hound that a polo player from the Pony Club was killed the other week, i think she was only 21. The Pony Club said its the first fatality in its 48 year history. Polo looks dangerous, its very fast, and there have been quite a lot of accidents. Anything to do with horses is dangerous, even showing. A judge was thrown off when riding a show hunter in a class last year who was seriously hurt, and couldnt ride for months. What amazes me is i still see riders, hacking on roads, without a riding hat on, and ive seen pictures of horses for sale doing dressage, jumping or at halt and their riders also without hats. It doesnt look cool, given the unpredictable nature of horses its just sheer stupidity.

Are hats not a legal requirement in this country?

I remember racing on the beach in Antigua without a hat, that was pretty hairy.

I think it is, especially if you ride on roads. Maybe im just a wooss (how do you spell that?!?!?) but ive seen too many accidents and come off myself head first a few times. I havent ridden for 5 years, but am thinking of starting again, and i think i will ride with a back protector as well this time!

I wouldn't ride in this country without one, especially on the roads. Far too many idiot drivers. My other half thinks i'm mad when I drive so slowly past them, I said I would show him what it was like when you are the one on the horse.

I'll never forget 8 of us were riding on the roads, and we trotted over a large bridge, and this van came hurtling upsides us, and the driver and his mate were bibbing the horn and yelling "alright girls show us your backsides in them lovely jodphurs!!". We just ignored them and they drove off, and luckily the horses we rode were bombproof in traffic and just happily trotted on. We did laugh afterwards, but what they did was totally stupid. I guarantee if one of the horses had bolted and a rider came off, they would have just drove off. My other half is a lorry driver and he always turns his engine off or slows down if he sees horses approaching. After watching me ride and seeing for himself just how big and strong horses are and of course how dangerous they can be, he fully appreciates the need to be sensible around them.

I NEVER ride without a hat, and wear one even when on foot around horses (eg loose schooling, lungeing, long-reining and so on). I am not so sure about back-protectors. They are compulsory for racing nowadays, and their design has improved no end (they used to be bulky and very hot to wear in summer). But still I find that they restrict free movement of the upper body, and I don't find them comfortable, so I don't wear one (at my stage of life, if I do have a bad crash, that'll be it anyway, body-protector or no body-protector!) Also, one of the most vulnerable areas, particularly when jumping, is the neck and upper spinal bones - and neither hats nor body protectors can guard against injuries to them.

On riding on the roads, you would have to be suicidal to go without a hat and body protector, though. We once had a young mare to sell, and I schooled her in traffic. She was fine, but NO horse is absolutely bomb-proof, and we lost the sale because we weren't prepared to guarantee to the kid's mother that she was absolutely safe on the road. NO HORSE IS, when you have idiot drivers and motor-cyclists around.
