I make this comment having backed to massive drifters. One won and one lost

I backed Cava Bien at 3.45, only 5 minutes later it is almost 6.0 and went off at 9/2 industry SP.

I also backed Swansbrook @ 2.76 which lost but only minutes after my bet was 4.0

I am starting to get fed up with my lack of skill in this and at least if I had backed on Bet365 I would have got the best odds.

What do others think and am I the only one that gets kippered on betfair?

Glennie, I'm open to correction on this, but if you back on Betfair, particularly earlier in the day as I often do, to protect yourself from this sort of thing you can always put up a price that TO YOU would be acceptable, and wait for it to be matched. After all, Betfair is based on the principle of "each person their own bookie", and if you back at a price you set, you are effectively waiting for a "bookie" (ie another account holder) to say whether they are prepared to lay your price or not. At least, I THINK that's how it works!!

If it isn't matched, there are two options; you can choose "take SP" for when the race goes in running (that is, Betfair SP not industry) or you can choose "keep" and if the bet is not matched at in-running it will lapse and you will get your stake back. And you can always review and change your bets by using the "my bets" button.

This means of course that you have to be pretty sure that the price you are asking for has a reasonable chance of being taken later in the day, and maybe this only works well when the backer has to back early because they will not be able to get online just before race time.

To be honest, I'm not sure whether that helps or not, and anyway there are people on here with much better and detailed knowledge of how Betfair works than me!

Lastly, I hope you dont mind, but I'm going to move this to the Betfair-Bookmakers-Betting Help forum.

my persoanl view [and I am not a betfair fan i any event] is that as more and morebookmakers are offering guaranteed best odds on the majority of races now the exchanges are best left to those wanting to either

[a] back ante-post at longer odds or

[b] watch their racing with their lap-top at hand ready to trade out/bet in running etc.

the margins which people quote for better odds are often made without the betfair percentage take being taken into account

just my luddite opinion of course

Unless your on a horse that is being backed late on then it is generally always better to leave it as late as possible as the big layers generally jump from race to race as they are not laying the horse they are laying the prices and do not want there money tied up for to long.

Have you tried putting prices up in running glennie to see how that goes as unless you are on a known front runner if a horse goes off 9/2 SP I would be surprised if you put up a <7.0> it would not get matched.

Generally prices on betfair are always bigger on the outsiders more so than the shorter priced ones and of course on the TBP markets there are generally huge advantages over the E/W option

Agree very much with Yaiyam about TBP bets on Betfair. I use this a lot as I find the prices very competitive. And very few online bookies, so far as I know, offer a place only option (Totesport I think, must look it up, but others?.....)

Betting with the Bookies is just as difficult. I think Stan James do best odds on every race. Most of the others that do best odds are selective. I had one bet yesterday on Bench Warrent which was an early 15/8 and drifted to 11/4.

The way I see it is if i take the 15/8 then thats the price I am happy with. Surely if you are happy with the price you get, thats the main thing. If you feel a price is too short then you ( we ) should not be taking it.

yes I get your point. These drifts happened over time spaces of 5 minutes and I guess I am just scared of taking SP and then my fancy turns out to be the plunge horse. I am beginning to think that it is better to back wit hte bookies offering best odds and then if my horse drifts I win and if the price comes in I am already on at a better price.

I agree that backing best odds is the way to go, although Betfred often dont offer best odds on the biggest handicap of the day.  On Betfair with hold up horses, you can often ask for a better price than SP and hope it gets matched in running. You need to click the tab that switches your bet to in running though.

Stan James do best odds for every race, as far as i know. Betfred do some good lucky 15 bonuses ect, but the early odds are normally lower than most bookies.

Got a letter from Hills last week ,saying they are now giving best odds to anyone who takes a price ,i have decided that that is a better offer than chancing it with betfair so now started ,phoning hills.betfair is still good for laying and of course arbing around making little profits here and there
