Trott is called in, and will bat 4 with Bell at 3.

This, presumably, is the same Bell whose failures at 3 are one of the reasons we have a problem there in the first place. And Panesar, again! I guess we need a Fred miracle again.

A Strauss (capt), A Cook, I Bell, J Trott, P Collingwood, M Prior, A Flintoff, S Broad, G Swann, J Anderson, S Harmison, G Onions, M Panesar, R Sidebottom.

If Panesar plays, there is no point in us turning up.

should play

strauss, cook, trescothick, bopara, bell, as first 5.

flintoff should only pay if he can bowl 20 overs a day because otherwise he is a part-time player and we have a shortage of bowlers unless we play 4 more and that means a masssive tail.

I agree that Trescothick would be a real asset - BUT he is fragile mentally, and knows it; and if I were a selector, disregarding the importance of the occasion, I would respect that.

There is no point in pressuring someone into a huge pressure situation if he has already been very honest and up front about his mental reaction to stress - which will inevitably affect his performance. I would think that if he had agreed to be called up, he would be putting himself through the sort of mental torture I would not wish on my worst enemy.

For a game of cricket, however important? I don't think so...

The selectors can only select those that are available. Trescothick isn't.

No they shouldn't.

Trecothick is an opening bat. Not a number three. If you drop Cook to three to let Banger then you break up one of the few things actually working in the England line up.
