Since today is technically the first day of the 2007 flat season I thought it might be a nice idea to see what horses people are looking forward to seeing this season. Maybe you've got your eye on a handicapper that can make the jump into pattern company, a young horse on an attractive mark, a dark horse for the Classics or an established Group performer. A few that I'll be keeping on the right side are...

Al Qasi - 4yo Colt - P W Chapple-Hyam. Very progressive sprinter winning 4 out of 6 last term. Handicaps out of the question now, but looks to have the ability to make the transition to pattern level. Group 1 performer in the making, IMO.

Eternal Path - 3yo Filly - Sir Michael Stoute. Showed up nicely in a hot HQ maiden last backend. The winner, Measured Tempo looks very good, but Eternal Path may well turn out to be Stoute's Oaks filly.

Finsceal Beo - 3yo Filly - J S Bolger. Not much to say about this one that hasn't already been said. Suffice to say, if she trains on, I think she could be one of the best miling fillies in a long time.

Raucous - 4yo Gelding - T P Tate. My real 'dark horse' for the season ahead. A horse that is bound to improve with a step up in trip. A BHB mark of 80 almost certainly underestimates his ability. After he lost his maiden tag Tom Tate said 'He's a lovely horse, who might win a Chester Cup one day'. Definitely one to keep an eye on.

I'll stop there. So, what horses are you particularly looking forward to seeing on the flat in 2007?

Hi Simon,

Very nice to hear from you dude.

I am in total agreement with Finisceal Beo - i have been building quite a portfolio on this little fox over the past few months (i better not go into amounts etc. or i may be accused of being "vulgar" and the likes)

Im looking forward to seeing how Cool Touch gets on this year - improved no-end last season to my delight.

MacArthur is my derby horse at the minute (building a slow but tasty portfolio on this one).

Al Qasi was a real favourite of mine last year and cant wait to see how he gets on this year!

Needless to say i cant wait to see WAR AND PEACE on a racecourse - monster.

Goodness me, where to start, I am excited about everything! I am looking forward to:

all unraced two-year olds, especially those bred for their maiden races and all those by first season sires
Mark Johnston's 3yo by Montjeu, Eradicate, although he looks a bit quirky and Dubai Millenium's sister Chaquiras
Nakheel getting an early start to the season and running over a proper trip
Mofarij racing over here
Teofilo doing the Triple Crown
Sir Percy bouncing back
Speciosa winning something
Some Australian horse winning a Group race in the midsummer meetings
The Young Mick & Sergeant Cecil match race!

Of course there are the obvious one's like Young Mick, Teofilo, Seargant Cecil, George Washington! & Finsceal Beo but the main one for me will be Stotsfold. Im not sure who has a the signature, but it goes along the line's of 'Stotsfold 2007 Will Be Special' and I for one totally agree. He is very progressive and put in some really decent performances last year, and I think if he improved over the winter he could be very good. Also looking forward to seeing Sir Gerard come back from Dubai along with Formal Decree who could be a real group 1 performer

I have been told that Home Affairs is being aimed at the Breeders Cup this year and Stoute does well with his older horses so will be keeping on the right side of this one.

For what it's worth I think Teofilo may get outpaced by a speedier bred type in the 2kg.

Dark horse for me is Red Rock Canyon - I like the breeding - the Rock and Imagine

Progressive horse for me is Loch Verdi - for obvious reasons - I'm hoping she improves with age like her mum did.

great thread, didn't realise today was the official start day for the flat, thought that was on saturday, the sooner the better though imo.

my number one horse i would have been following this season if he had not gotten himself injured would have been Spanish Moon, owned by Adbulla, trained by Stoute and looked seriously good last year at Newmarket, but all hope of him winning at epsom has gone now i would say.

a few others I like are:
Mythical Kid,
Lemon Drop Kid(USA) (11.1f) - Myth To Reality(FR) (Sadler's Wells (USA)(11.3f))
($1,400,000) 10th foal, very closely related to top-class Divine Proportions (by Kingmambo), multiple Gr1 winner at 2-3, & to top-class 2yo/miler Whipper (by Miesque's Son), also half-brother to smart stayer Assos; dam useful winner at 3, placed over 12f

Although he was beaten by Dijeerr last year in a 2yo grp 3 at Newbury, having been caught late on the line after idling in front, I very much doubt Dijeerr would be able to repeat the outcome again. Mythical Kid was by far the most impressive 2yo in that race, he was settled nicely by Moore that day and raced wide away from the pack but came passed the field with ease, which was very impressive considering the ground. With a bit more experience under his belt I can see him winning some top races. Entered for the Guineas, should be Godolphin No.1 imo

Arch Swing
Arch(USA) (7.8f) - Gold Pattern(USA) (Slew O'Gold (USA)(10.8f))
(45,000euros, foal $55,000) 5th foal, half-sister to a winner in Japan, and toWoodmaven, placed in the US; dam a triple winner on turf in the US, half-sister to several US winners including Seattle Patterm, useful multiple 1m+ winner

I have learnt to take note of any entry in a classic from Oxx (actually,, thats a lie, I have been told by friends who know far more than me to take note of any entry in a classic trained by Oxx, especially if it is in Britain).
So Arch Swing, won a half decent maiden at The Curragh last August and then improved dramatically for the run and looked very impressive next time out winning a fillies only grp3 7f again at The Curragh, but she didn't just win, she cruised to the lead in superb style, and quickened away further with a f to go. Entered for both Guineas, hmmm I wonder....

Rahiyah,
Not quite upto the standard of the above so i'll spare you the full details. She was well beaten by Finsceal Beo at Newmarket last year in the Rockfel, and her stable mate sander camillo is the number 1 filly in the Noseda yard for the Guineas, but I thought Rahiyah looked pretty smart at Newmarket and I can see her going well this year at the big meetings.

There are others but I need some dinner, off the top of my head some of the others I am looking forward to this year are. Rail Link (of course), Dylan Thomas (King George winner this year?), Red Evie (hope she fills the void left by Ouija Board), Admire Moon (the best japanese horse around at present). Anything bred by HH Aga Khan and anything trained by Fabre.

oh yeh, before I go, Dutch Art this years 2000 Guineas winner, and Miss Beatrix, becked her for the 1000 Guineas, not so confident now but still one to follow.
