Now it's all nearly over (for another 4 years, as we will no doubt keep being reminded!) shall we do a Gold, Silver, Bronze for the presenters?
To be honest, there were so many off and on that I can't really remember them all, especially for the more obscure sports like synchronised swimming, shooting and so on. But there must have been, in your eyes, outstanding performances and not so outstanding. Interestingly, Alistair Down, this morning on the Morning Line, gave out kudos to Adrian Chiles, John Inverdale and Claire Balding.
So what do we think?
Gold: John Inverdale, Adrian Chiles, Michael Johnson, Colin Jackson
Silver: Claire Balding, Jennie Loriston-Clarke (dressage), Dan Topolski, Steve Redgrave, Richie Woodall, Brendan Foster, Steve Cram, Hugh Porter
Bronze: Sue Barker, Jonathan Edwards (thought he was pretty boring), Sharon Davies, Barry Davies (hockey), Steven Hadley
Rest: nowhere, especially the rowing comentator who could only shout - (sorry, I seem to have taken against him in a big way!); although apologies to all those who commentated on sports I didn't manage to see much of!
Overall, I think I would have to award a Gold - the BBC obviously did their utmost to bring us excellent coverage and decent commentary - so a Team Gold for them!
Well there's a surprise...was he actually commentating? good God, what on??
Also forgot to mention Hazel Irvine (?) and Gaby Logan - which probably says it all.
I also quite liked the very confused Matthew Pinsent today at the Taekwondo - every "new" presenters' nightmare - a fairly simple commentating job that turns into several international incidents.

Rishi did the equestrian events from Hong Kong after Clare left for Beijing

I loved the rowing commentator, his commentary for the coxless fours was fantastic.
I thought John Inverdale and Sir Steve Redgrave were great by the water and I thought it was touching when Adrian revealed that Hazel covers her eyes when they put the flame out as it's too sad
Sue Barker just seems so sterile but I loved Michael Johnson and Colin Jackson's passion on the track events. _________________ Greet people with four kisses - one for each cheek... Duke Ellington
and I LOVED the rowing commentator; whenever a commentator starts to sound ike a fan, he's doing a good job
Sorry, don't agree; whenever a commentator starts to sound like a fan all his/her objectivity goes out the window and my eardrums hurt! They are paid to commentate, not cheerlead.

i disagree entirely
i want the commentators to cheer the british lads home
thats what i'm doing, jumping up and down on the sofa and yelling with them
you arent meant to be objective when its the olympics, youre supposed to be getting behind our athletes. at least thats my view
some of the great commentator moments in the olympics have been like that
"where was the german defence....and frankly, who cares"? Barry Davies, GB Hockey, a classic. _________________ Geordie_R

Yep - I loved the way the commentators got involved. It didn't stop most of them delivering good commentary when Team GB! GB! GB! weren't featured or doing well.
If it were a horse race then I'd feel differently - but that has a lot to do with the likes of Pitman and Scudamore not being coherent at the best of times.
Best Presenter / Anchorman / Anchorwoman - Hazel Irvine
Really knows her stuff, enthusiastic about all the sports & GB and worked really well with the irreverent style of Adrian Chiles.
Best Commentator - Hugh Porter
The bloke is class. Is known as "Mr British Cycling" and his knowledge of the sport is second to none. Explained the different cycling events perfectly for those watching disciplines such as the Madison or Points Race for the first time. Even love the way he would always say "Hoy/Wiggins/Pendelton etc is the O-lym-pic Champion!"
Best pundit - Michael Johnson
Head & shoulders above the competition.
Very special mention for Rob Walker in his boat out at the sailing. Some great interviews out on the water as the sailors won their medals.
I thought the BBC coverage of the Olympics was excellent with every sport being covered and delivered by quality commentators (either past Olympians - Andy Jameson & Aidrian Moorhouse in the swimming, Gary Herbert in the rowing, Steve Cram athletics etc. or experienced professional commentators like Jim Neally at the boxing or Nick Mullins at the Taekwondo etc) with top drawer pundits along side.
Personally speaking I've no problem with the BBC sending out as big a team as they did to the Games. That's the sort of coverage I want my Licence fee being spent on.
