Hi all,

Should hopefully be at Newbury tomorrow with the debutante Phar Again in the bumper at 5.30.

He is with Emma - who trained his full brother...the ill-fated Phar Out Phavourite - who was a horse that I always liked in the yard and was part-owned by Mike Cattermole.

"Phavs" was quirky but consistent - if that's not a contradiction - being placed in 9 of his 16 runs - excluding a 4th of 16 in the Kempton Future Stars Bumper on his racecourse debut.

Phar again has come to hand quite early, will like the drying ground and he could go well on his debut tomorrow.

Those with RUK should watch out for the ugly 30-something in the tasteless sprts jacket...in the winners enclosure!

)Hi Grace,

Afraid not...don't know where they drew the"phar" from but "again" is a son of Beneficial (decent speed influence) out of the NH mare Phar From Men.

Sound pedigree and a 12F bumper is a good starting point - will get 2.5 miles in time...should certainly do better on decent ground, although he will handle some cut.

Fingers crossed for a bold show!

Some joker is looking to place a fiver at 230 on Betfair - Phat chance!! (that was a joke...well nearly )

Ah ok thanks. The Phar part is because Phar From Men was from Phardante, that was a busy old horse in the hay

Your horse is Phar IRE, Phar Bleu is French.

There are many other Phars IRE all out of Phardante

Phar City IRE, Phar Breeze IRE, Phar Afield IRE, Phar, Phar Echo IRe, Phar Dated IRE. Just thought i would mention hehe, but will hush now.

You have a lovely day Falbrav and Very good luck with Phar Again, i'm going to back him

Daylami,

Your memory is spot on - Phar Out Phavourite came down at that bloody ditch five fom home at Leicester that has undone Secured twice.

That fall obviously knocked his confidence and the next time he ran at Ludlow he paid the ultimate penalty. That was the same afternoon that Secured won at 100-1 and it quite spoilt my day.

If you go back a couple of years prior to that, I went down to Emma Lavelle's to make a choice between two horses that worked together on the gallops - one of these was a big bay chap that oozed quality and the other was somewhat smaller but pinned his ears back and gave it everything on the gallops.

I went for the big bay horse and had reason to regret it because he was fragile - only saw the racecourse three times - and was ultimately retired to a PTP yard in Wales. The other horse was, in fact, Phar Out Phavourite. However, all my regrets over that choice changed one afternoon at Ludlow. Yes, I would have had fun with Phar Out Phavourite for a while, but at least I was spared the anguish of owning part of a horse that died on the racecourse.

Even in part-ownership, you get incredibly attached to them - I've adored all of my mine...and get incredibly defensive when people suggest that they aren't very good!!!

I'm really heartened that you remember Phar Out Phavourite so well - hopefully his brother's exploits will do his memory proud.

Falbrav,

Is Phar Again worth a few quid e/w today? I notice you can get 25s on him at the mo.

The Racing Post online card shows that one newspaper has actually tipped him for the race!!

Andy,

It's always terribly difficult to judge with bumpers and I can say quite unashamedly that usually follow the market in such events.

That said, his full brother certainly ran well fresh, indeed "Phavourite's" debut was probably the best performance that he put in over his first half a dozen racecourse experiences.

It's raining in Kent at the mo and obviously if the ground is loose it's going to get worse as the day wears on - I couldn't be bullish but expect him to run well.

There are worse speculative wagers than 25-1 about Phar Again...that's for sure.

It a tricky Bumper with some of the top stables having a runner.

Maybe a watching brief on Falbrav's horse today is best.

I remember watching the race on friday, and have only just seen this thread just now.
I marked Phar Again down as one to follow, he seemed to be tanking along behind the leaders but seemed to run about about when asked to come with a challenge.
A very promising debut, and another decent horse for you to have fun with.
Let us know if he'll be out again soon, he looks like even better ground may suit.

Hi DD,

Have seldom heard such optimistic comments coming from out of the camp.

Barry Fenton reported that the the horse had "blown up" two out and the steering went a bit as a result of tiredness and greenness.

You are right - better ground will suit, as will a bit further. However, he travelled every bit as well on the track as he does at home.

I heard the phrase "he will definitely win a bumper" being bandied about afterwards.

Falbrav,

I agree mate. I caught up with the race on the RP website over the weekend. He ran really well for a debutant and travelled well, but as someone said, he just looked a bit green when wondering about a bit. But 6th was a very promising first effort I think.

I must say, Secured on Thursday, Phar Again on Friday and possibly Suntini this week, McManus, Hemmings and Johnson best watch out!! What pirice Falbrav for leading owner next season?!?!
