PROLOGUE FOR MR. KIPLING

The other day I saw a blackberry bush
On a quiet road in the evening hush
It took me back to former schooldays
Running carefree in the shining haze
Picking blackberries on an autumn day
As mushrooms like toad stools paved the way
We often sat back on a slope or ridge
Watching the trains pass under the bridge
Or just stare at the setting sun and dream
Of life or nothing but its bright beam
Looking for its invisible rainbow and its crock of gold
Demanding and wanting the future to be told
The years have disappeared as fast as the trains
Which is a connundrum for our limited brains
Those boys have gone far and wide over the years
Through life's valley of joys and tears
Houses have replaced the blackberry bush
With hedges roses and green grass so lush
Todays kids tread on our ghosts with laughter like thunder
Watching their trains disappear with equal wonder
QUIZMAN 2006 :P
