Todays serious issue.
The great train Robber is 80 in August ,he has three strokes ,he cant talk ,he cant walk.the parole board report says he should be freed for compassionate reasons
Jack Straw has just announced that he has rejected the parole boards recommendations and will not be freeing Ronnie Biggs.
Jach Straw says he has never repented his crime and must stay in prison.
Any thoughts

If he hadn't done a runner he'd have been out of prison years ago.

Mastermind Bruce Reynolds goes on the run, gives himself up, and gets 10 years, the difference between him and Ronnie Biggs is what?  The crime was huge against society at that time, that is why the sentences were so draconian IMO.

Sentenced to 30 years and has served less than 10.

Did a bunk and lived it up in the sun for 30 years.

Why should he be let out?

They were merciless to the people working on the train so he should do his time. I get the impression that these lower grade security prisons are a bit of a holiday camp anyway or have I read too many tabloids.

Ask him, oh no he can't talk. but I ask you, Nick Leeson defrauds 800M and gets six and a half years.  Murderers who get life sentences serve on average less than 17 years, the law is an ass.

The law might be an ass, however Biggs was involved in a violent crime and stuck two fingers up to the system by escaping and partying in the sun for thirty years. Nothing but scum of the earth hope he lingers on in prison a few more years.

well let's look at it this way

Biggs wa involved in a major crime which included the infliction of severe injuries on the driver, as well as the theft of a sum which in todays money would (I believe) be about $30 mill.

Unlike (say) Leeson the robbers got the money (leeson just lost lots - he didnt get it himself).

The primaryy reason that others serve lesser sentences is that they show some remorse for their crimes

Biggs has lorded it for many years. After being sprung from prison he ran to Brazil where he not only boasted about being outside the British justice system but gave interviews telling evryone that he was a latter day robin hood (eh?) and was proud of having taken part in the robbery becuase it meant he had made a ark in his life. He said the driver who was coshed deserved it because (and I quote) "he should have just f*ing done as we said and not tried to be a F*ing hero"

having laughed at the fact that he was safe from justice for 30 years he asked to come back to teh UK "to die" (and this wa some time ago). we were told he had "months" to live (I suppoe we all do, it's just  a question of how many) yet here we are several years later with him still totally unrepentant - Biggs being a continued drain on the NHS and Police/Prison resources and wanting to be released on parole.

He still is totally unrepentant and unremoseful for his actions, has served a proportion of his sentence only and should serve the rest.

2 points to consider

1 "if he had been inside all the tie he would be out by now". yes but he absconded, lived freely for 30 years. He has not been sentenced for absconding, and would have got the balance of his sentence plus 3 to 5 for that.

2 "he's no danger now". no but in te rather sad times we live in he would become a hero of sorts to many. Buster edwards became a folk hero; at least he did his time but he's no hero to me; Biggs would be selling his story, his photo amything to the tabloids and profitting from his crime.

He should stay in prison and die there.

Final oint. the only reason why no-one was charged with murder over the death of the train driver is because no-one would admit who coshed him (although they all could have been charged under "common purpose" and because it was more than 1 year and 1 day after his being coshed that the driver died.

The sad thing is that you all have heard of Ronald Biggs, but how mnay of you have heard of JAck Mills? Everything biggs has earned from his crime that can be traced (including royalties from his repulsive collaboration with the Sex Pistols who really should have known better) should be given to his widow.

allthough i might agree with keeping him in,the man who was coshed died of leukemia and i dont think you can catch that from being coshed ,so it cant be classed as murder
