Not a good start for Team GB as Michael Whitakers horse Portofino 63 has been found to be lame on arrival in Hong Kong.

His place will be taken by Nick Skelton with his horse Russel.

Oh good, a showjumping thread

I don't follow the showjumping anymore, I haven't a clue who's who these days. I'm glad to hear that Nick Skelton is still riding, I don't know if his surgeon will be so pleased, he was supposed to give it up after his terrible accident, you can't blame him for wanting to carry on though.

Come on Nick!

Have to admit I stopped following showjumping quite a while ago. Too many of the riders seem so aggressive with their horses and they seem to regard them as an instrument rather than a living entity. It's why I like eventing - it's always "the horse was brilliant" and "I cocked up, I let the horse down".

I agree Rowan, I feel very sorry for the horses when they leave the arena after a disappointing round and their riders are clearly annoyed with them! It doesn't make pleasant viewing.

I shall look forward to seeing Nick Skelton in action on Friday though.

Apart from the attitude shown by some riders towards their horses, show-jumping is possibly the least "natural" of the disciplines. If you look closely you will see that many horses have very severe bits (gags, pelhams, and all sorts of ironmongery) and that they are compressed constantly in their way of going. I started to dislike it ever since I became keener on "natural" horsemanship (not to the exclusion of everything else, but all those straps and metalwork should not be necessary!!)

Yes, if I was to come back as a horse I'd rather take my chances round Aintree than go showjumping!

Better still, perhaps GP might look after me

I'm such a dummy, I can't make head nor tail of this showjumping.

Nick Skelton's had a clear round though    and Tim Stockdale has just had one fence down, he's got a cracking grey mare.

I think it's the team showjumping next week, so this must be the individual, not sure how many rounds they have to do each.

I'm watching so many random sports it's all turning into a bit of a blur now

I really want to turn it off and do something useful, I keep thinking I'll just watch a bit more.

There's some men's shot put on now, I'll watch that for a bit, these games are addictive!

How cute are those tractors!

I haven't seen much show-jumping yet - I'll watch this in preference to the womens steeplechase (they don't even have horses!)

Nick did well there

I shall cast an evil spell on our rivals to make sure they have plenty of fences down
