GRADE 1 winner Snoopy Loopy has been retired after failing to shine in the Bet365 Charlie Hall Chase last Saturday.

After chasing the leaders in Wetherby’s most prestigious event, Snoopy Loopy was pulled up by jockey Seamus Durack with three fences left to jump, which in turn influenced the decision by owner Dai Walters to retire his star performer.

"It is safe to say he is retired," Walters said on Tuesday.

"He would certainly not be running again this season and we would be looking at giving him a long break. But if he had a year out then he probably would be too old to come back, so it's safe to say he is retired, yes."

Walters added: "I think he is now off a mark which is too high, he is never going to win off that mark and it would only be cruel to the horse to keep racing him. The jockey said after the race at Wetherby that he just did not want to be there and there's no point pushing him or he could drop down dead on the track.

"He has been a decent servant and we would just like to see him enjoy his retirement."

The highlight of Snoopy Loopy's career was beating Kauto Star in the Betfair Chase at Haydock 12 months ago.

The Peter Bowen-trained gelding made all at 33-1 to beat Tamarinbleu by half a length, as Kauto Star unseated Sam Thomas at the final fence.

Walters nominated the race as his fondest memory.

"It's got to be the Betfair Chase, I remember that well," he said.

"He also ran well at Huntingdon against Monet's Garden. He has been a wonderful horse to us I just wish I had a couple more as good as him."

The 11-year-old won £293,467 in prize-money in 31 races.

A sensible decision given his age and recent form figures.  I think they went to the well a bit too often with him last autumn/winter and it's a credit to the horse that he kept on battling away at the highest level.

I underestimated this horse on a few occasions, credit to his trainer and owners, hope he has a nice retirement.

I'm glad to hear this, and hope he has a long and happy retirement. Less that two years ago he was rated just over 100 and went up a long way, very quickly; that can break a horse but he's been amazingly tough.

That's a shame but he looked woeful at the weekend & he doesn't really owe his connections anything. He's retired in good shape though!

Best memory: Market Rasen in the Summer Chase when I picked him out & he went in at 16/1.
