It's getting harder and harder for staunch supporters of the EU such as myself to carry on defending it when the people of Ireland vote 'No' emphatically and the EU just turn round and say "have another go". On Friday, they are voting on the same thing. Even though I was initially in favour of the Lisbon Treaty, I am now very much against it and hope the Irish send it packing once more. If not there is still the chance of the Czech Prime Minister(nutjob that he is) having his tuppence worth. The EU could be a great institution that helps combat poverty, improve trade and relations and become a major player in world politics. To do this, it must be democratic which it clearly isn't at the moment.

I was in Portugal last week and had espadarte, smoked swordfish. It was quite magnificent.

The cuttlefish was also fantastic, though I ate more than I was meant to and my crap was pitch black for a few days thereafter.

Sorry, series subject, more sensible thought tomorrow perhaps...

Quite! If Lisbon would only stick to smoked swordfish, which sounds both ecologically a crime but gastronomically a triumph....

I am laughing so hard here. On my first visit to Texas I told my host I had to get to hospital fast. She asked why and I said I had "Been" green. She said I wasnt dying but just pigged out on Guacamole ( Mashed Avacado i think )

Yeh, while devouring the splendid beast I was thinking it was slightly ironic that I had no problem eating swordfish, but would I have eaten smoked dolphin? Funny how some animals are perceived as cuddly and friendly and others are just food. I don't know much about how the species compare, but are swordfish really that much less intelligent than dolphins? Were they unfairly ignored by the animal behaviorists just because they couldn't balance a beach-ball on their nose?

They did manage, but just a few seconds, before it burst.

Smoked Swordfish doesn't look too bad.

And the Smoked Swordfish salad looks delicious.

We live here in Ireland in a nanny state
where they tell you how to vote.
It will probably be passed this time
as the scaremongering seems to be working.
I voted NO the last time though I am undecided
so far this time.  I suppose we should be
grateful that it is wriiten in our 1937
constitution that we have to have a vote
in such things.
