Who Tells The Best Jokes?

The Birmingham accent is the most comical in Britain, according to a new survey.
The Brummie brogue, closely associated with comedians such as Frank Skinner, Jasper Carrott and Lenny Henry, edged out Liverpool's Scouse accent.
Researchers asked 4,000 people to listen to the same joke in 11 UK regional accents to discover which they found most amusing.
Received Pronunciation (RP) - usually associated with the South East and the middle classes - picked up the lowest score, amusing just 1.1% of those asked.
The research, led by comedy expert Dr Lesley Harbidge from the University of Aberdeen, was not all good news for those at the top of the list.
It found that the funniest accents were also deemed the least intelligent.

RP was seen as most effective for withering one-liners and put-downs, while the Welsh accent was as the least effective. The Cockney accent was deemed most effective in terms of risque humour.
The study was commissioned by the Paramount Comedy Channel.
:: The funniest accents in the UK:
1. Birmingham (20.8%)
2. Liverpudlian (15.8%)
3. Geordie (14.3%)
4. Welsh (10.5%)
5. Yorkshire (9.2%)
6. Cockney (8.2%)
7. Belfast (8%)
8. South West England (6.6%)
9. Glaswegian (3.4%)
10. Mancunian (2.1%)
11. Received Pronunciation (1.1%)
:: The test joke was chosen by Dr Harbidge for reflecting traditional British stand-up comedy.
With no notion of cleverness on the part of the teller, the listener's concentration is focused on the lilt of the words themselves.
The joke goes: Workmen are eating sandwiches, balancing on a girder miles above the ground.
"You ever get that urge, Frank? It begins with looking down from 50 storeys up, thinking about the meaningless of life, listening to dark voices deep inside you, and you think, 'Should I?... Should I?...Should I push someone off?"'
Do you agree? I think Welsh mens accents are funny, especially people like Rob Brydon, but women with Welsh accents just sound like they are moaning. My other half loves girls with Irish and Geordie accents. He's not keen on Cockney. Although living near Pompey, it is full of wannabe cockneys. My accent is boring.
I have to say, and I'm not going to make myself very popular with some members on the board, I HATE Scouse accents, Dublin accents and Welsh accents, especially that throat-clearing thing they do - arrrggghhh!!!
I do realise that someone with a Belfast accent saying this is a bit hypocritical, my accent being right up there in the irritating stakes, but I will qualify what I say with the comment that although I find the ACCENT irritating, the people who live there can be very decent and generous and not in the least irritating - honest!!
Have to agree with Johnnio - hate scouse and welsh accents.
The best for me are a nice soft Scottish or Irish.. accent
Geordie accents are ok as are York and Lancs.
Sorry to you Southern dwellers but none of your accents do a lot for me
cheers _________________ A tips only a good one if its a winning one

Have to agree with you Johnnio.....about the Belfast accent being right up there in the irritating stakes.

The funniest accent is definitely the Brummy accent. We have someone in out darts team who has a really think Brummy accent and it's hilarious.
I must be the only person who finds the welsh accent attractive. I told this to my mate who has a welsh girlfriend and he rung her up and told her. Because normally people outside Wales laugh at her accent she was well chuffed until he said, and I quote;
"Don't get me wrong love, there's a lot of things I find attractive about you, it's just your accent isn't one of them".
Amazingly they are still together _________________ You're born with nothing, and better off that way,

Im afraid i really hate the way people from Birmingham speak, and the geordie accent is not much better either! My mum is scottish so i cant say much about that accent! But i speak cockney, i was brought up in the real east end of London (around the docks area) so all you brummies and geordies can have your own back!
alot of people try to talk like cockney's Melanie , and i can not stand that- cockney ryming slang is amusing at times - would you like to share some with us ... ??? _________________ I've got some Blueberry Yum Yum and it's divine ...
Brummie/Black Country
Glaswegian (sorry Splits)
Belfast (sorry Johnio)
One of my mates who is originally from Tamworth, but didn't have a particularly strong Midlands accent, has been living in Wakefield for the past few years. The last time I spoke to her I really struggled to keep up. It took me ages to work out that "ah nerrr" meant "I know".
Nicest:
Scouse (not the really harsh ones like on Brookside)
Edinburgh
Southern Irish
Geordie (soft version)
Some Welsh accents can be quite pleasant. Mostly when you hear a Welsh voice you think of Charlotte Church, which isn't good.
Try visiting the US with an English person who has a strong regional accent- the Yanks get really confused if people don't speak like Liz Hurley. They thought my mate from W Yorks was German, refused to believe she was English.
I lived in East London/Essex for most of my life so I have kinda have a cockney accent.
I'm with you Chuuga I like them cheeky little scouse birds. _________________ TWIST MAGIC. Obstacles can't stop you. Problems can't stop you. Most of all other horses can't stop you. Only you can stop you.
I'm proud to be Southern Irish, we are perceived to speak a bit
quickly but I suppose it's not how you sound, it's what you're saying
and kindness is the greatest human virtue _________________ Life is what happens while you're busy making plans.

Chugga i actually cant think of any! My mum always used to have a go at me when i was younger "to speak properly"! I have to admit Eastenders (the programme) makes me cringe, when i hear them speak i think god i hope i dont sound as bad as that!! I do like the irish accent myself, i think its quite sexy!
