The grand National up the road ,hearing people say I have only one bet a year and thats in the Grand National. shows how much the race means to people. _________________ I AM HAPPY TO JOIN WITH YOU TODAY IN WHAT WILL GO DOWN IN HISTORY AS THE GREATEST DEMONSTRATION FOR FREEDOM IN THE HISTORY OF OUR NATION(THE I HAVE A DREAM SPEECH,1963, MARTIN LUTHER KING)
World Cup or Euro Championships (if we qualify). The Ashes a couple of summers ago was hard to beat as well.
Wimbledon doesnt do it for me, mostly because we never have that many to cheer on for very long.

Yes what a superbly strange/patriotic summer that was
I'd loved cricket since I was knee high to a grasshopper but none of my mates did, and then from nowhere the whole country suddenly got behind the team big time.
Was a great atmosphere all summer - felt like everyone was rushing home from work every night just to catch the last half hour of play. Superb

Yeah, same here, suddenly my colleagues knew the names of the team. Those flags people had for their cars for the football started appearing again. It really was quite amazing. _________________ "The Guineas are too early - I found two dead polar bears on our gallops this week, annd a penguin nicked my scarf"

Normally I only get patriotic about football and cricket(although do always want the Europeans to give the Yanks a spanking at The Breeders Cup so perhaps that as well).
However, much the same as The Ashes series when everyone got into cricket(apart from those that were into it before), I think when England won the World Cup that really took some beating. Suddenly, for the first time in my life, I was interested in rugby and was going beserk when Wilkinson kicked that ball over. This interest hasn't lasted I have to say but for them few weeks, nothing else seemed to matter. _________________ You're born with nothing, and better off that way,

Yes, that was good. (A bit like when football was coming home.) I followed that series on BBC blog, stumbled onto the BBC Racing Forum and then onto here...

So you can all blame Andrew Flintoff.
actually, blame the guy who thought it was a good idea for the aussies to warm up with a game of football on a slippery outfield.
Look at the result of the first test and then tell me with any degree of logic how england would have won if McGrath, injured in that nonsense and not bowling at anything like his best when he returned, had been fully fit. In the first test they murdered us with 2 bowlers, in the rest we just pipped them when they had 1.
OBEs all round.... _________________ Geordie_R

Agrre OBE's for one series win was over the top and yes, England were fortunate on that count, but they beat what was put in front of them which is all any team can do.
It's also a broad apecualtion that the one single change of being able to pick someone who wasn't available would have made a difference despite what logic you use.
Not dissimilar to me saying Newcastle would have stayed up if they had kept Allerdyce using the logic he had kept Bolton up for years with less resources!
