Well where do i start? Last year seems so long ago and where i had a terrible festival and missed a whole days racing. Tuesday morning it started well by actually getting a seat on the train, thats rare enough. We arrived in Cheltenham around 10.20am and while waiting for a lift we seen Chris Kamara, if that tash doesnt put you i na good mood what will! Well we asked what his tip was in which he replied Binocular, think i may have laughed Anyway we will skip to the course where i didnt fancy Cousin Vinny especially after hearing about him not eating up, i got on Red Moloney ew and didnt get on what should of been my saver Go nNative, i thought RM travlled well and got squeazed out so was unlucky, quite annoyed about missing the winner though! Onto the Arkle where i was quite confident on Planet of Sound ew so backed at 10-1 and i already had an AP bet on Tatenen, the ew money was there but Forpaddy was a worthy winner, still in the placepot after 2 and an ew bet returned, much better than last year!
Onto the William Hill, a handicap boooo. Well i had no idea so went on the stats, patsy hall and possol. Dont need to say much more than byebye placepot! Wichita was on my list but as he was favoutite i went with the other two. The big race of the day and my favourite race of the day, im not sure why but i just couldnt get id of Katchit winning, iv never backed the little fellowe but i was willing to risk it at the odds. We all know what happend there and the 2nd horse in my placepot was....you guessed it Punjabi! 5th race, lots of beers in and having a great laugh and L'amis too short @ 7-4 in a competive race so its a A new Story ew @ 14s, no idea it had got 4th but again ew money returned so happy. 6th race i couldnt see past United making the frame so i had a biggish ew bet @ 4-1, What a win by the favourite, was in awe as it romped it and got most my stake back so it was hard to complain at seing such a good winner beat me into second!
Day one can only be rounded up as damage limitation, yes i missed Go Native and Punjabi but lessons will be learnt from that, had a great night out and didnt eat at Burger King for once. My friend backed Forpaddy so we were both quite pleased!
Wednesday, well it was the usual hangover but the sun was out.....a better start than last year. A nice full english and then Tracey (the lady's whoes house it was gave me a 4 leafed clover out of the garden, not really into that thing but oh well!) She had to go out so her husband dopped us off in town in his car... a 1955 chevy bel air, very classy until i couldnt get out and about ripped the seat off. Theres not much room in those things to get out! Arrived at the course and had to find left baggage, very impressed that it was free and very pleasant staff. So its the 1st race, not much of a fancy but Cant Buy time and Tricky Trickster in the placepot, i had a decent bet to nothing on cant buy time @ 4s but after tuesday stuck a saver on Tricky @ 14s, so a 14-1 winner and my main bet back, very very good start to the day! Second race and my banker of the day, i even tipped this one to the taxi drive, had a nice 10pt win @ 3-1. So now 2 lines in the placepot as i had Karabak aswell in this. I had fancied Carruthers for this so had an ew bet at 7-1, thought it was unlucky because of the big blunder but impressed with the winner who was in my placepot, in it after 3 legs, was feelign good as i had well chief and MM in the next! I had an ew bet on WC @ 4-1 without MM so the day was a success regardless of what happend. Before this race i had a big bet on Quel Esprit in the bumper @ 10/1 as i knew Ruby would win on MM and thought it might get backed. Next bet i had Mirage D'or ew @ 14s which got second so some more place money, after this i didnt need to have another bet, had2 in the last leg of the placepot and my bumper bet placed, time for the Cigar and to meet YY which only took all day
Saticon grabbed 3rd for me so i had 4lines up in the placepot, not bad for my 1st ever placepot win, paid £750 but i only had 10p lines so £300 back for me, not bad from £6.40 placed. Last race is where i knew my luck was in, Quel Esprit came 4th but my slip said 3 places, the bookie was showing as paying out on 4 and as i had most my bets on with them through the day they didnt seem to complain when i mentioned it and rightly paid out, RESULT!
By this point i was ecstatic, my best ever day at Cheltenham on course, placepot up and a wallet full of cash! I was going home a happy chappy to say the least. We got a taxi back to the station where i had realised i left my phone in the taxi! Luckily he had turned round and i got it back. The 4 leaf clover is still in my wallet as it seems to be doing me a great favour.... If you read yesterdays threads you may have seen i put a £50 double on VPU and KB only for it not to have gone on when i checked last night!
Train home to Leicester to watch United and a very celebratory night, met 2 mates out along with my mate who came with in which i was very generous in paying for everyones night which was very boozey. Yesterday not succesfull today a couple of poor ew bets but regained that on Kauto "the" Star. Im glad i have this forum as you people know how much Cheltenham means as most dont seem to understand why im so excited about it. Just 12 months to go for hopefulyl another lifetime memory.
Nice write up Kyle. You cant beat a good day or two at the races, especially with a couple of winners thrown in. _________________ If at first you dont succeed..then skydiving isnt for you
In the immediate aftermath I suspect this is the best overall festival I have seen. There were some brilliant finishes and rides. I also thought some of the novices were exceptional; Mikhael D'Haguenet, Cooldine, Weapons Amnesty. Ruby smashed the record, Nicholls almost got a clean sweep of championships and Kauto produced a great stat busting performance. I suppose the fact I cleaned up on Kauto ante-post helped
Momorable few days both punting and performance! _________________ One way to stop a runaway horse is to bet on him.
Indeed, out of intrest what price did you have Kauto? I had him in an unsuccesfull multi at 4-1 and i think i remember seing him at 7/4 TBP! _________________ Wolves winner 20.1.08
Great write up KK and well played on the placepot, makes a visit that all the more sweeter.
I have been twice, went for the 3 days the year Dessie won the GC and was there for the 2nd of Istabraqs triumphs in the CH.
I had forgotten how great the experience was, but reading this write up and speaking to JDF after his 1st visit just brings back all the great memories.
Will have to do it again some time.

Indeed MT, i now want Masterminded to go on and win more so i can say i saw that horse! I was only one race off the placepot again today with my perms, 1 out of 4 and 2 missing otu on 1 leg not so bad. Hopefully i just wont go in too confident next year. _________________ Wolves winner 20.1.08
