Has anybody visited there recently?
It's the wife's 40th later this year, and as i have zero imagination at buying gifts, i have instead booked a short break to Prague (it's one of the few places still on her list to see that she had never been to) for the pair of us.
I'm looking to make the trip special and memorable for her - i've booked us into a 5 star hotel (thats the remainder of last years redundancy money away now) and now i'm looking for ideas on what to do when we get there (fancy restaurants, boat trips etc).
Does anybody have any (sensible) ideas? I guess the more romantic the better.
I have been to Prague before, about 12-13 years ago - my wife is vegetarian, so i'm hoping that eating out has improved for her sake. I'm also guessing that i wont be drinking 11p pints this time as well.....
Cheers

I read the post wrong and thought you said you won't be drinking 11 pints this time!
Mind you at 11p you could buy many more than that.
Sorry I've not been to Prague so I can't help on that front, but I will say that I'm 40 later this year too and it's nice you are thinking ahead _________________ Greet people with four kisses - one for each cheek... Duke Ellington |

I've been to Prague. It's a great city offering plenty of opportunities to imbibe high culture. However, due to the armies of stag trips intent on imbibing something other than high culture; it's not somewhere I'd take the wife. _________________ This is like a flashback,

| great place to take a lady if you stick to the coffee shops and restaurants of the old town. take her for a wander over charles bridge after dinner and if it's quiet it's very romantic. |

Maybe a night out at the opera, I believe the state opera house is quite famous.
It's a while since I went to Prague but I still remember the walk from the town to the castle being a killer and then there was a bell tower we climbed up once we got there, absolutely knackered after that. |

The Disneyland of Eastern Europe IMO. Absolutely heaving with tourists and hard to get a glimpse of local culture- I hardly heard much Czech spoken when I was there. It is beautiful, but you hardly get a chance to appreciate it (Florence is similarly crowded, but doesn't have the hard-edged cynicism of Eastern Europeans keen to part Westerners from their tourist dollars)- try getting up really early, or going out of the town centre a bit. _________________ Known as the catch of the camp. |

Went a few years ago just as it was transforming from East European country to a more Western style of living. It's akin to visting somewhere like Paris these days.
You won't be surprised to find a Tesco Supermarket maybe a Marks & Spencer in the city as they have been there for a few years.
Try an out of city Hotel & travel into the city on the Subway which is fairly cheap. _________________ SBH Comp 2008 - Runner Up |

| The last time I was in Prague, I was woken up by the Soviet tanks rolling in....but that was a good few years ago now. There is some wonderful architecture and some great culture (museums, galleries and concerts) but as Tagalie says, hard-nosed locals can make it a bit unwelcoming, and hard-drinking stag dos ditto! |

Thanks for the feedback folks - sounds like the city has changed since i was there - we'll be doing our best to avoid the stag parties, sounds like see the city early in the day, and stick to restaurants at night
Cheers
