10 courses

if racing had to rationalise and we could only have 10 courses which courses would you keep. We need a mix of jumps and flat and geographical spread is important. I thought

Ascot
Newmarket
Goodwood
York
Newcastle
Ayr
Cheltenham
Aintree
Cartmel
sandown

Which courses would take out and why but you have to try and keep the geogrphical spread.
Death n Taxes

just realised no course in wales so swap goodwood for chepstow.
geordie_racer

hexham
perth
cartmel
wetherby
musselburgh
sedgefield
ayr
kelso
carlisle
newcastle

plenty of spread there and all my requirements catered for

next please?

joking apart once you start to say you only need 10 or 12 or 20 courses you can bet your bottom dollar you will get it

any major cities (inclding London) lack a racecourse. Birmingham and Manchester stand out for that reason.
Losing hamilton woul take glasgow's only course

the only one I would get rid of is Kemptn PArk, as they cannot run a chase on grass. shameful

You couldn't put racecourse in Central London due to space & as it is there are 3 courses not far from London: Epsom, Sandown & Kempton. There are other tracks that are very easy to get too from London like Lingfield & Brighton.

If you only had 10 you would end up with big gaps across the country & areas with more than one track!

Really you should be looking at tracks to lose rather than keep brining it down to a more suitable number.
Hampton

Tracks I would lose:

Brighton
Yarmouth
Exeter
Ripon
Mussleburgh
Bangor

I think that would still leave a good cover across the country.

It will never happen anyway!!

no Epsom? yet you have Cartmel. bonkers
Death n Taxes

cartmel was geographical epsom and goodwood were 11 and 12

How can you lose Exeter?
Where would all the stars of the future run?
You keeping Taunton but losing Exeter, words fail me!

then we'd have to have 12 and not 10
Jimbob

In no particular order;

Newmarket
Cheltenham
Sandown
Epsom
Doncaster
Ayr
Haydock
Ffos Las
Ascot
Lingfield

If there's only 10 then they need to mainly be all mixed so with the exceptions of HQ, Cheltenham & Epsom I have picked on that basis. Having said that, if I could have an 11th it would be Aintree!
penleguin

Ah well, here are mine:

Epsom
York
Goodwood
Ascot
Sandown
Chester
Cheltenham
Doncaster
Newbury
Perth

These are from personal experience and there are plenty others that look good that I've not been to (e.g. Ffos Las). I wouldn't lose Musselburgh, nice wee course though a bit chilly with an easterly wind.

I did consider the fact that Exeter runs a big Chase race each year, but Exeter is currently not a vaiable course & is losing money so would be one of the first to go!

I considered some that might go like Hexham but geograph basis would stay.

You wouldn't please everybody if you started earmarking courses for closure!

The land may still be there but it wouldn't be suitable today due to things like problems regarding traffic in the area! When it was in operation there was less cars on the road!
