6 Nations 2009

I can see no reason why Wales will not win it again but probably no grand slam this time.I thnk of the "big 4" England and France have gone backwards whilst Ireland and Wales have maintained or improved. As Wales has England and Ireland to play in Cardiff it makes them likeliest winners.

Don't see sufficient improvement, yet, in Scotland and think italy will be a valiant last with their crucial fixture being at Murrayfield.

So it's Wales,Ireland,England,France,Scotland & Italy in that order imho.
SkankyMinga

Good article Awaywardlad.

Wales -5 looks an outstanding bet for the opening weekend.
theGoingStick

Agreed good article awaywardlad, I seem to remember it being a profitable tournament for you last year hope it's the same this year

quality article awaywardlad
do you not think that martin johnson will be looking to put on a show after the dissappoinments of the Autumn tests ???

cheers archie.

Yes I'm sure Johnson will want to BUT to pick Goode and Ellis at halfback is not forwardthinking - much better to give youngsters some game time(I know Ellis is only 26 but he's not good enough). Also Italy usually start the 6 Nations well and their performances tail off as the tournament progresses.

Archie - I'm not underestimating the Scots but they have lost 2 vital forwards to injury for the game on Sunday and surely to frighten Wales Hadden's selection could/should have been a little bolder with the likes of Thom Evans picked.

Archie/TGS/SM - thank you.
Machiavellian

Backed Wales earlier in the week, not in love with the price but I think they'll be even shorter after Sunday.

Wales are traditionally poor favourites but having analysed it I can't see why they won't win it again as the fixtures fall better for them this year even though they have 3 away games.Haven't put them up as a bet as think 2/1 is stingy so have put up another grand Slam for them at 11/2 as a value bet.

It's a shame Henson is out of Sunday. Henson and Roberts at 12 and 13 could be a master stroke by Galtland. I'm looking forward to seeing them.
jonoefc1

You could do a lot worse than backing Julien Malzieu to be
France's 'Top Tryscorer' in the competition. The Clermont winger
has been racking up scores for his club all season and he comes into this
Six Nations in the best form of his life.
FallonFacta

C'mon England!!

But not too much - I've gone for Italy at +9 and +15

I hope the brothers do well - I like a story!
FallonFacta

I probably shouldn't bet on Rugby

Ireland to win!  -3

Still stressed!
FallonFacta

FallonFacta

Hoooo ray!

Great game - a bit too stressful to bet on though!  I might try to just watch tomorrow
Machiavellian

Well played!
FallonFacta

Anyone watching??

Amazing National Anthems

I've gone for Wales to get to 10 points first and Wales at -10

I do wish Henson was playing - always nice to have something good to look at!
FallonFacta

Maybe playing rugby is more dangerous than taking e!  Can't believe he's on his feet
FallonFacta

Slightly stressed about the -10 now - C'mon Wales
FallonFacta

No way!  He didn't get that!
SkankyMinga

Yep I was relieved too. Thank God for TV replays.
archie mackenzie

you been on the dog and bone to frank awaywardlad
hes made changes to the back line with both evans brothers starting but from watching last weeks game it seemed obvious to me it was the front 5 who needed changing after being destroyed by the welsh
surely time is running out for hadden,if we suffer a heavy loss or another performance like last week  then maybe its time for
cheers archie
archie mackenzie

you think its curtains for bristol after tonights humping by the falcons awaywardlad ???

cheers archie.
ezzoud

Going into Cardiff soon to try and blag a ticket. I actually think England are value today giving up 12 points. Not betting though, far too nervous already.
Come on Wales!
ezzoud

England GETTING 12 points, of course.
just think you can disregard the Italy game for formbook purposes.
Today could be niggly and discipline will be vital.
jonoefc1

Betting today:

1 point that Wales' total points will be under 26.5 against England @ 5/6 with several bookies.
jonoefc1

For those of you out there who think Wales will win without England getting many points at all, surely the 'race to 10 points' at 1/2 (Wales) looks like buying money??
FallonFacta

I need to see what I've got left before I worry about Wales and England!

First off - Scotland +8 - I have a vague theory that they were't that bad last week (when they weren't knocking themselves out), plus France always give away penalties (I have nothing to back this up though), plus I always go against France
FallonFacta

Three point difference at half-time - going well!  Glad it's not the only thing to watch though!!

Yes
awaywardlad

I thought England were excellent today and possibly for the first time since Gatland/Edwards have taken over Wales were outthought!

BUT Johnson needs to be done with yesterdays men - Vickery/Bortwick/Goode/Tindall/Cueto - and give youth it's chance NOW.

Wales are now a world class side  and could well win another Grand Slam.

Well done to scotland - too little too late Frank.
jennywales

If England had not lacked discipline they would have been closer, but I still don't think they would have won (just!)

Armitage, when he got the chance, was superb.

A young relative (13) has just "signed" (is that possible?) for Harlequins. I must learn more about club rugby.....
ezzoud

Good match in Cardiff, and a great  day out. Not feeling so lively today.
I found a good bet yesterday in Corals - bet on 1st try scorer and get the same stake on last try scorer free. Did Byrne and Halfpenny unfortunately, but it willbe worth looking out for for future.
shamardal84

I personally think if Wilkinson was in the team yesterday england would have won, they just miss him too much. But credit to Wales who done well to win

Archie,I hope you're right and I'm wrong as I'd love to see Scotland win by 30 points whilst scoring a bucketful of tries.BUT I fear the Italian aim will be to stop Scotland playing by conceding penalties and keeping in touch on the scoreboard. If that's the case I just hope the referee remembers to use his cards frequently.

BBBBBBBBOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

lol.

France played very well though and just kept plugging on.  immense forward play, Wales just lacking a little.

Yes, I thought their second half was disappointing - they couldn't seem to get to the game line at all. French played very well, what an improvement!

Cos being a girl my common sense goes a bit skew wiff when someone who looks like a Roman God plays

I didn't look at the betting before the game but got 5/4 when France were down 3-6 - Gives me something to play with today.

Looking forward to Ireland v England    No idea about bets yet - depends on the horses!
theGoingStick

I've gone for the mighty Scot's (-9) to bt Italy. I think they've shown enough to cope with Italy who've been beaten by all the teams so far by 20+ points.
jennywales

Ireland for me today but not by much. O'Driscoll and O'Gara will have to be at the top of their game.....Anyway hope the English get stuffed, whatever the margin!

PS FF I'm sorry, but thinking the preening, ill-disciplined, egotistic, bad-mannered, selfish Gavin Henson is worth a second look is beyond me!

But what do I know....??!!!

Gone for Ireland to win -14 - Sorry England but I don't know any of you!

Plus 1st score an Irish Try
FallonFacta

And O'Driscoll to score first and last try - I really am going now
FallonFacta

What is it about rugby that makes grown men cry?     I'm sure the anthems are there to wind them up even further!

I'm feeling a ridiculous amount of guilt betting against England!  Brian Moore isn't helping!!

I started following 5 Nations properly when I worked in a university conference centre from about 1991 - Then it was all Rob Andrew, Will Carling and the Devine Jeremy Guscott!!  And a few other scary lookers like Brian Moore and Martin Johnson!!!
The Uni ran some Open University type science-courses where they'd have to stay the weekend and we organised the tea break to coincide with the beginning of the 2nd half.  I had to watch the first half, make tea and coffee at half time and try and update them before the 2nd half started... wasn't long before I became obsessed enough not to make notes.
We were supposed to wait-on in a white shirt and black skirt - we actually waited on in a England White Shirt (and black skirt   )

That time is probably where my dislike of France comes from - and why I feel SO guilty about betting against England

Why do I need to explain myself?

Ramble over!

Not sure what they were but they are currently 6/1 to do so.

I wouldn't bet on it though as after a fine performance against Wales France will probably play like drains and lose to England!!

Ireland -6 at evens
Wales -18 at evens

O'Driscoll to score first and last try - 11/1 each - It worked last time

I'd love England to win today - and I was confident they could yesterday.  Surely Martin Johnson could calm them down and cut out the penalties... Then I saw his interview on the Beeb - Maybe they twisted it - but he seemed hysterical and not someone who could instill control into anyone

I might find a good book to read from 3pm - just keep one eye on the TV
