20 Years ago today the first All Weather meeting was staged at Lingfield.
I remember it attracted alot of runners & they had at least 10 races starting at about 11.30am.
Things have setlled down now & it's all part of the daily fare!
It was ment to cover the period of time during the winter when turf racing was lost to the weather but now it's 'any time, anyday' racing!
Love it or hate it it's here to stay!

The aw gets alot of abuse but its a world of its own really, to me you have NH, flat and AW. Personally i quite like it.

In general I like the all weather but I think its a graveyard for anyone seeking value - here's classic example from last night's kempton meet - I think the last line of this write up highlights perfectly why AW will always be frowned upon !

In usual circumstances, I'd be doing my best to brush last night's performance of Giant Sequoia under the carpet. My nap finished only third, a real disappointment given that my other two selections here yesterday both also just finished second.
But it was the fact that he was sent off at an incredible starting price of 4-9 that merits further comment, given that he was actually a drifter on Betfair, where he was matched at 2.28 less than 30 seconds before the start of the race before returning at a Betfair SP of 2.17 (equivalent to 11-10 including commission).
Rarely can there have been such a pronounced example of a starting price being easily manipulated as a result of the small sample of bookmakers on-course and the weak market at Kempton's less-popular evening meetings.
Three recorded bets of £1,000 to win £500 were recorded by the Press Association and who can blame the on-course bookmakers for accepting them when you could hedge on Betfair, place a bet of around £720 at 2.1 and guarantee yourself an instant profit of nearly £300 whether the horse wins or loses – a nice bonus at the end of a quiet night.
One can only speculate at the motivations of those placing the bets. Perhaps they were hedging against the liabilities of an accumulator or a substantial bet accepted at starting price. Perhaps they were just showing off.
Whatever the case, once again the weakness of the starting price system have been highlighted. Is there a punter left who still has confidence in the SP at these minor all-weather meetings?

The new sp return system isnt fair to punters. This fiasco isnt all down to betfair.
