An RIP Thread?Just an idea, rather than having a new RIP xxxxxxxx thread every other day. Don't want to just start one without discussing it; thought I'd see if others agreed or not

I assume you mean an RIP thread for people not horses? If you do mean horses then ignore this next bit!
The RIP threads are mainly on Off Topic, which isn't very busy, so I think we don't have to limit threads there. But I'll go with the flow if others agree.
Also - thinking as a Mod - there will always be someone who thinks this person is such a loss they should have their own thread. Then mods would have to lock a RIP thread to add the info onto the main RIP thread makes us look incredibly heartless  And that's the sort of thing that really upsets people and we'd end up rowing about threads rather than showing respect for someone who's just died.

I think Owl has a good idea here and that the thread should be a permanent one for each year added to as people die.It could be similar to the "horses that are out for the season thread" ie just the name with no comments.If people want to comment they have the off topic section .This would be more of an ongoing record index.

A thread with a list of people who have died? Don't like that idea at all. I don't think people come here to be informed of the deaths, at least I don't anyway, that's what the news is for. People post RIP threads to pay tribute to people, to discuss their lives, not to inform, thus I don't think a list is necessary.
Perhaps an RIP thread if numerous threads really bother people but as FF said; off topic isn't that busy any way so there isn't the pressure to keep everything as neat as on Horse Racing.
I'd keep the status quo.

personally i would leave it as it is
they tend to be short threads, which drop away quickly, and bring to users attention the loss of someone notable
as a lazy so and so I wouls probabl miss some entries on common RIP thread,
also the "who is out" thread is in addition to RIP entries [eg recently Jodami]
