Betfair - Lays Early Doors

Now I think that someone has probably answered this question elsewhere - but can I find it? No, not even with good old Search!!

I noticed this morning when glancing at early prices (you can sometimes nick a decent one!) that a horse at Newton Abbott (Barney's Mate) was quoted at about 25s, but had one lay against him (for £2) at 1000. Now is this just because the market has not settled yet, he has been withdrawn or is likely to be, the 1000 was put up because there was no lay money (in which case why not just leave the square blank), did someone put up £2 to be matched at 1000 in the hope that someone would take it, or is this a "teaser" designed to tempt (please believe me, I wasn't!)?

I recall someone saying that people sometimes put up lays in the hope of getting some mug to match them - was this an example, or something else? All help greatly appreciated!

Yes that's just someone trying to get 999/1 on a horse. If someone is crazy enough to match the price they'll just get it matched as a much lower price and make a profit and/or get a free bet.

Yes its no different to when, fir example, the back column is 6.2 and the lay column is 6.8 and you many enter 6.6 and hope it will get matched. Just trying to get a bigger price than any layer is currently offering. In this case, it's just a very hopeful punter trying to get 999/1

Simply put by the wise Owl. It was just a hopefull punter chancing his arm.

Jenny, its possible to leave a lay bet, hoping it gets matched before the race. There is also a feature called keep, above where you bet is described. Click this and then the box called accept change or something, and it will switch your bet to in running once the race starts.

Thanks all - I use the "keep, cancel on in-play, take SP" facility (depending on how I think the odds will change) occasionally. But only for back, not lay.

Still have not got up enough courage to lay a horse, and I'm not sure I'm psychologically suited to doing this anyway!

Thanks again for enlightenment.

Jenny, if its an 8 runner field. Try and think you are backing seven horses to win, as against one horse to lose.
