Betfair.

I have been using BF for a year to place a few bets here and there but decided to spend a bit more time on it yesterday, I was having a close look at money that was waiting to be matched, particularly on the night races. There was some quite large amounts waiting to be matched on a few bigger priced horses in particular and they all went to to win or very close. (Sheer Bluff, Nassar, Presenting proform)

When I mean large amounts I don't mean thousands but there would be say £20/30 here and there and then Suddenly on a horse trading about 21 there would be £150, 22 for  about £126, they seemed to stand out.

Does anyone else ever look out for particular trends on BF.

I would personally ignore them.  Amounts in the hundreds wouldn't be particularly big on BF anyway, so may just have been coincidence.

Also watch out for large amounts that disappear quickly, as these are placed as an "enticement" for others to 'follow the money' and the same people are trying to drive the price down to lay the horse.

The one thing I watch for is drifters, especially favourites, just before the off (ie the last minute or two).  Big drifters at this time rarely win.

As you state you are reasonably new to BF, make sure you use the graphic by each horse, as that shows the bets placed over time which will give you a very clear idea of the betting patterns on the said horse (small graph symbol next to horses name).  Good Luck.
chippy1722

I didn't know you could actually click on each horse for information.

I actually backed bramcote Lorne in the first race todat based on t#what i saw yesterday, nearly paid off this time.

i've never seen thousands bet on a horse except a favourite when i look at Bf.

maybe I need to watch it for longer and more closely.

Is Betfair down at the moment
jennywales

I can get on the horse racing markets fine at the moment.
YAIYAM

Yes i close it and restarted and it seems fine now
jennywales

Bump.

Betfair is not at the moment accepting my login (I was looking to do some small bets at Stratford and was keen to see if there were any decent early prices).

Every time I logged in the site froze and chucked me out of my broadband connection. The connection is fine for everywhere else.....

Anyone else got problems this sunny Sunday morning?
theGoingStick

I can login, I haven't tried placing a bet though.
jennywales

Let me know if you have problems placing bets, thanks. I got as far as selecting the bet and clicking it, and the whole site froze and then the broadband dropped out. This happened repeatedly, most frustrating as I was looking to put on place only. It may be me, but I cleared everything up so far as possible last night, so I'm just wondering....
theGoingStick

I just stuck a pointless £2 bet on mastercraftsman, just for you Jennywales    and it worked just fine !!!

Do you know how to clear your browser cache ?
jennywales

That was really kind - hope it wins for you!

No I don't know how to do that! I'm pretty OK on some of the stuff like defragging, but that's one of the things I keep coming across that I don't know how to do! I'm sure it's really simple, though.....

It could be that it is me, because the same thing happened on the Totesport site (but Paddy Power is just fine!!)
alansouthcoast

Jenny.

Click on tools at the top right of the page
Scroll down and click Internet options
Where it says browser history, click delete.

A new tab opens
click delete for temporary internet files
Do the same with cookies, and again with history.

This could take a little while if you have never emptied the cache before.
RightJudgeIam

Jenny you need to be clearing your cache on a regular (weekly at least) basis.. clogs up your system otherwise
jennywales

OK guys, thanks!
jennywales

Have done as advised. However, although I can use Paddy Power, Betfair is still playing up - I can log in OK, read the odds OK, but as soon as I click "confirm bet" the site drops out (or rather, my broadband connection drops out). I have tried clicking on MyBets, and all I get is a message saying "You have no bets on this market". I am actually now a bit cross because I wanted to back General Striker p/o in the Kerry National, and it got 3rd, but couldn't.

I've only got £18 or so in the account, so it's not life or death, just annoying. It is sweet of Betfair to be so considerate as to try and stop me losing money, but I'd rather they didn't!
alansouthcoast

Jenny it sounds like a software conflict. Try emailing betfairs help desk.

alansouthcoast wrote:

yes indeed.. what type of anti-virus are you running? Although Betfair claim to have sorted this out some protection software can interrupte the 'send receive' signal between your PC and the site.

Just as an experiment, try disabling your anti-virus then try placing a bet to see whether it works.
jennywales

Thanks both. I run F-Secure, which is, as I understand it, pretty good. I avoid all the Nortons and so on. The F-Secure is generally thought of as being pretty good, but it isn't a "regular" type. However, these problems have only started to occur since I changed from Orange to BT Broadband. I moved from Orange because their spam filters were non-existent and I was getting 80-100 spam emails a day, and I then put in a Spamcop software which simply stopped any emails from Orange getting through at all!

So I now use hotmail for email. But I do think the Betfair problem may well be something to do with the software. I'll email them and we'll see.

Thanks again.
alansouthcoast

Jenny, my Hotmail account places notifications from here into my junk folder. I have marked this site a safe user, but it still happens. Just a heads up.
jennywales

Yes, I've noticed that too - the "You have a pm" thing. I just check them from the forum site and don't bother with the notification thingy - but I do check my junk mail folder from time to time, as hotmail does some odd things occasionally.
theGoingStick

I really don't understand how betfair settles their horse racing markets. Last night the Wolverhampton races were being settled within minutes of finishing, at Hamilton today they're certainly taking their time, surely the procedure is the saame for both the courses.

I can just about understand why it takes international races so long to settle but I can see why people see that as being a bit frustrating as well.
jennywales

Understaffed because its Sunday and they don't want to pay too many people double time??

No seriously, I have noticed this as well from time to time - settlement times seem to vary, sometimes just by a little bit and sometimes by quite a lot. No idea why....

On my wee Betfair problem, they sent a reasonably helpful message saying I was to disable my firewall - now (a) I don't know how and (b) it sounds dangerous - because if a firewall is what I think it is then it might be quite necessary to have it!

Where does the option to disable a firewall exist? (I can't find it in Help because all it does is tell you what a firewall is, not how to do stuff with it). Any ideas anyone?

They seem to settle football bets a lot quicker than horse racing, I think there's bit of sports bias going on there

Yes if you disable your firewall it can leave your computer vulnerable. However you can disable it and see if you can place a bet and then re-enable it afterwards. At least you'd know if that was causing you the problem ?

Windows has its own firewall and some security products have their own firewall. I'm guessing but I'd imagine you've only got the windows one switched on.

It's quite simple to disable it, all you need to do is go into the Control Panel, this is one of the options on the programs menu which appears when you press the start button. Once you have got to the Control Panel there should be an icon in there called "Windows Firewall", double click it and simply change the settings in there to disable it. You will probably need to re-boot and then have a go at placing a bet.
jennywales

Ta tGS - very helpful - I'll try that!
jennywales

Star tGS 0 - it worked! I have put £2 on Alberta's Run for the Hennessy!!

Thanks - I will just have to remember to turn off the firewall when I want to use Betfair.

Anyone know why withdrawals have to match deposits before you can unregister a card?
Sky_Of_Darkness

LongJ0n wrote:

Law to stop money laundering, and / or building up massive debts on one card, then not paying them back but getting back extra money into a bank for example.

If you ring up, say the card is no longer in use etc, then they can manually remove it.

Is anyone having trouble accessing Betfair this evening?  I just wanted to have a look at as couple of markets.

I have had to do this with loads of sites recently. I wonder if its a glitch with Internet Explorer ?
YAIYAM

Question, or few anyway.

1. Why do people use Betfair if they do not understand it
2. Why do people gamble on Betfair If they do not understand how
3. Why do people back horses at any price without any consideration to what chance it has.

I am asking these questions because I am looking at the 3:25 race at Leopardstown tomorrow(for a good reason)and noticed there has been some money bet on the race already and called up the market on OSIRIXAMIX for which there are the following bets.

2.34   £1
2.36   £4
2.38   £4
2.40   £4
2.42   £4
2.44   £2
2.46   £2

OK its only just over £10 but how can someone who trusts themselves to use Betfair be so STUPID to back a horse @ less than 6/4 to win a 27 runner hcp hurdle race.
This must be some of the worst gambling I have ever seen.
Just like to add to show how STUPID this is you can now back the horse at 3.7>

Yes I think a lot of people do not understand the whole 'unmatched' element and think they must simply take the price on offer. I recall a few people on here who have been gambling for years making comments which suggests they do not know that they can enter a higher price on a market with little liquidity. Stupid yes but don't moan as we need stupid people to make money - we don't bet against bookmakers, we bet against other gamblers; even when not betting on the exchanges, as it's ultimately punters' money which determines bookies prices. Celebrate their stupidity; don't get annoyed by it!
YAIYAM

Yes It Just seems beyond belief that someone will use there hard earned cash which it must be because there certainly not proffesional gamblers   and use it in this way.

The daft thing is if the horse wins they will actually believe the money bet was well placed
