Computer start-up help. This is more of an anoyance than a problem. When I start my pc it whirrs away and takes about five minutes to start up. I have no clue what it is searching for and have stopped a few of the automatic scans. It is ludicrous that I now have a pc way faster than when I had Windows 95, yet XP takes longer to start up. Any ideas warmly welcomed.
Thanks.....Alan

Is your auto defrag working?
Is the fan getting enough air?

I defrag once a week. Good point about the fan though, maybe a good clean would help things. ( The PC not me...lol )

Try and reduce start up progs, see what progs are open using Ctrl Alt Del (task manager) is your system tray full of icons. Google the following message " how can I get my computer to start up quicker" and you will find that there is a minimum amount of files that need to run at startup. There is also a prog, free download, called SIW.exe which should be useful, it is used by technicians.

As Papa suggests check what is in the task manager - have a look at the processes. I've found some virus detectives can be incredibly slow - notably Norton.

I had the same problem. Mainly due to filling my computer with about 40gb of music.
The usual delete rubbish, defrag routine just didn't help.
So I went mad and bought 4gb ddr RAM, which really helped.
Now I want to buy an external hard drive solely to fill with music, to leave the rest of my computer to just do the usual easy internet/email stuff.
Trying to find a 320gb upto 500gb hard drive for £30 seems impossible, even though you can get 1tb for £60.
I'll definitely check out that SIW.exe, thanks papa

When its loaded up try going:
Start > Run > type in msconfig and hit enter
go to the start up tab
See if you have any crap there that is not a necessity i.e. msn messenger, an email client etc and if you dont need it to load when your pc starts up untick the box
I wouldnt advise unticking too many of those boxes though, without knowing specifically what you are telling not to run when starting up (so just the glaringly obvious) as it could cause big probs.

Sound advice, there is on google a minimum number of lines in msconfig needed to start up. Please back up any files that you are about to alter, otherwise it will take time to boot up..............forever.

thanks papa, you wouldn't believe it but they are actually cheaper in store at pcworld or comet. £45 for a seagate/western digital 500gb
ebay is a sellers market imo

XP and Vista do take longer to start up, installing more memory is the way to go in my opinion.

Thanks for the help all. I will have a look later.

If you have the room in your console, internal 1tb hard drives are much cheaper than external and only require switching to slave, under £60, should take a few Max Bygraves and Des O'Connor albums.

If you've got Vista it's such a nightmare of an operating system. Windows have called it rubbish themselves! It just uses up way too much memory that even a fairly decent spec computer can struggle on it and find it freezes quite often. Hence the joy of Windows 7

Get as much memory as you can. Most issues you describe are down to that. which OS are you using?

My pc must be a monster. Vista working fine for 2 yrs +
Wouldn't hold my breath on Windows 7 - heard some bad reports.

It must be! My laptop struggled a treat with vista hence the update to 7. Its running fine for me at the mo but it's got the inevitable bugs as every new version does.

When someone buys a new computer you should be allowed the operating system of your choice not have the latest thrust upon you. I find XP the best OS that I have had so far, and if I was to buy a new computer it is because my old one is getting past it, if it was just the OS then I would replace the OS at a far less cost.

Windows 7 looks very good. Less demanding on hardware, more reliable than Vista and without the daft interruptions you get when trying to change anything.
For big networks it will be possible to roll out, as Vista had many issues with Group Policy, and it is great for home PC's too.
As an aside, I had a play today with the beta of Office 2010. Outlook looks awesome but the rest am not so sure about yet.

I've been using Windows 7 for the past fortnight and it is miles better than vista.

I always avoided Vista and hopped straight from XP to a test edition of Windows 7 Ultimate. It's lovely!
