| Quote: | LEADING jockey Darryl Holland has been arrested for trying to pass counterfeit cash.
The top flat rider, 37 - known to punters as "Dazzler" - attempted to buy two mobile phones with pal John Tabor using 500 fake American dollars in Northern Cyprus.
The shopkeeper called cops, who nicked Holland at the Colony Hotel in Kyrenia. They allegedly found another fake $200. The British pair were charged today and are expected to appear in court on Tuesday.
A source in the crime-hit Turkish-controlled zone said: "If found guilty they could get four or five months. Counterfeit money is a big problem here."
Darryl, who lives with wife Jacqueline in Newmarket, Cambs, has won more than £1million in prize money this year.
His manager Peter Merchant said today: "It appears the guy was in a shop buying mobiles or whatever it was and paid for it with this money and Darryll was just stood there as it were.
"Obviously they swiped the money and found out it was fraud, called the police and they were both arrested.
"They've taken them inside from there and they were both searched and this guy obviously had this money on him but they found Darryll was clean. He didn't have anything on him."
The former champion apprentice jockey last rode on October 24. He was due at Newmarket today. In 1995, he was banned from riding in Hong Kong for associating with illegal bookmakers but was not charged.
Tabor, who is in his late 30s, is of no fixed address. He formerly lived in South-East England. |
A million apologies for quoting the sun
When I saw Tabor I thought this was a major story but maybe not!
