much against my better judgement i am going to the afternoon and evening sessions of the darts at the circus tavern on saturday. i was roped in by tales of legendary drinking and gambling sessions.
not knowing anything about darts i will no doubt get drunk and lose hundreds of pounds to my better informed colleagues.
anyone been to the darts for a session before? i'm dreading it and looking forward to it in equal measure...

I went to the Circus Tavern for the 2006 World Championship Final. Although the result was a complete and utter walkover(Taylor beat Manley 7-0) I still had a great time and the atmosphere is ok. Personally, as a darts fan, I prefer BDO events as there is more respect for the players and it's less about the glamour & more about the darts. However, I can't say I haven't had a good time at the PDC Events I have been to and for a non darts fan who wants a few beers & a good time the PDC is probably the better option.

On the TV it looks like a cracking night. I'm not a big fan of Sid Waddell so hopefully you wont be subjected to him over a PA system because that would do my head in
Don't you get given a sign where you can write something on it and when the cameraman walks by you flash it in the lens ? Maybe a bit of forethought on that and you could get yourself on TV ?

good god.
firstly, i had a really good time. but the boozing is just insane. at one point i was at the bar getting served, and some fat bloke walks up next to me and the barmaid asks what he wants. "forty pints of stella please darling"
by the end of the afternoon session we'd had 6 pints and a jack daniels each. we'd been punting a lot between ourselves but coral were also there making prices as they were sponsoring the tournament. so during the interval they bring 'round they're slips for the evening session. now obviously i'm a bit tipsy from the afternoon, but i'm looking at the prices for the first evening match and they just don't look right. it was priestley vs thornton, and thornton was 8/13 favourite - but they had priced up all of his correct scores as if he was the outsider. i tell my mate, who takes a hundred quid off of me and goes to the coral counter and has £20 each on each of 9-4 9-5 9-6 9-7 and 9-8. it finished 9-5 to thornton and we went to collect expecting to be told they'd noticed the mistake. they had, and the correct price was supposed to be 7/1 on 9-5, but because they'd agreed the slip and taken the cash they honored it - and paid out at 20's! we were chuffed - but not as chuffed as when we turned 'round and saw a queue of blokes waiting to collect they're winnings on the same bet! corals had been completely turned over on it
so, good times, and the evening rumbled on and we gambled amongst ourselves and made markets and drank too much.
the only downside is that the venue was populated almost entirely by the type of bloke who defines his masculinity by the amount of groaning he does when having a piss, the speed with which he drinks a pint, and the number of times he swears in a sentence. a lot of unsavory characters, and the women were even worse.
anyway, we had a good time, crashed at a horrible hotel, and drove back this morning. i'm even getting over my hangover already...
