I-pod Touch........I bought one of these a week ago, and it has frozen twice already. The first time, the reset trick worked, but this second time I can't get past the Apple logo.
Is it screwed?

Yes. Take it back. If something breaks within the first week of buying it, whether you fix it yourself or not, there is nearly always an underlying problem that will come back and bite you later on (probably just after the warranty runs out).

Yep - I'd say so. Take it back.
I've had one for a fair while and had no freezing problems so far.

took her 3 replacements to get it right
son no1 had similar with his nano
