Idea - Greyhound Competition ?We are a bit thin on excitement round here so I was thinking maybe we could do a regular greyhound competition?
But that's as far as it got...
Any ideas for the format or anyone interested at all otherwise I won't bother my head thinking about it.

Please don't take this the wrong way.
I was an avid greyhound spectator at Powderhall in the 80s and now have a greyhound wandering about the house
I'm also sure that Winston Churchill also held rather derogatory views of greyhound racing with regards the random nature of it all but
Pit yourself against a die.

Hi Tawndres, I appreciate what you are saying, but it would be in the nature of the other forum comps where posters would all be pitting themselves against each other in the random world of the dogs!
And I tend to think it is not always as random as it seems
Anyway as you are the only response so far it looks like I'll be on my own

Im not sure there will be enough for a competition but if there are, count me in.
Maybe a weekend nap. Or a competition on antepost bets.

An exclusive club of two
We'll have to do it with a twist I suppose - how about all the big comps - heats and finals or something through the year - or just the Triple Crown with a million for the winner

If you can make it a competition that someone who knows nowt about greyhounds can enter count me in.
I'll probably do about as well as your average once a year punter on the grand national but someone has to get the wooden spoon and I'm sure there's plenty of room in my kitchen for another one

I am pathetically grateful to you GS for taking an interest in our 'umble dogs
It's not the million you're after is it
Why don't we do the Derbies - an a/p outright NAP and EW and then two dogs for each of the heats or something - points making prizes?
Edited to add - when the Shawfield RM has made his cut of 48 dogs we I could post them up here for the AP sels and then as the heats go on post them up, so GS wouldn't have to lift a leg so to speak

I'm always willing to taste the forbidden fruits of an unknown sport Consider me the wild card entry in the competition
So I guess some simple questions to ask :-
An e/w selection is that one dog that gets to the final or one the finishes in the first 4 places ?
Looking at the odds I see Holyromanemperor is in the betting, he isn't going to be whisked off to stud is he
So 48 entries, 8 heats then ? Pick 2 dogs from each heat and you get more points the further your selection goes. Have I got that right ? Or should I stand in the corner of the classroom.
What's the most advantageous draw to get ?

You are too advanced for me!
I was thinking (just this second you asked me!) we could have two dogs before the heats started as outright win and win or second place (ew).
Then before each heat we could pick two dogs to qualify and get points from SPs. Then if they all go out in heat 1, we can still play in heat 2 with two new dog selections. Else we'd all be out after heat one probably, due to the randomness that Tawndres mentioned!
On traps I have taken these Shawfield stats from the link if you want to check my interpretation!
T3 - 21%, 2 - 19%, 6 - 18% 1 & 4 - 16%, 5 - 10%
http://www.greyhound-data.com/d?p...21&year=2007&distance=all
But if you are so minded it is interesting to work out the race beforehand e.g. which dogs have early pace, are they drawn in the best trap to get a run, is there likely to be trouble based on the previous two factors and which dog(s) are most likely to be the jam in the sandwich - don't pick the jam! As clear as marmalade now I expect. I'm off to bed! I expect Alan will have something more useful to add though

i'm KINDA into greyhounds... go to shelbourne park every couple of weeks, and watch it whenever it's on SKY..
maybe the comp could be done whenever its live on sky?? maybe a level stakes comp, or just a simple, "pick a dog in each live race and whoever gets most winners wins" comp???
I'm in anywho...

Thanks for the suggestions Adam - I'll let Alan decide he has run more comps over on horseracing and he does a SKY column on Tuedays too so that might well work. The idea is to interest some new posters who don't venture on to here much so any ideas welcome!
And welcome to yourself

Welcome to Adam and TGS.
How about a Sky Sports comp.
Rules ( If agreable )
One selection in every race.
Winners given 1 point plus the s/p ( Example 5/2 gtes 3 1/2 points )
Also one point if the selection comes second.
We could also do an e/w competition on the Derbys details to be worked out nearer the time for individual Derbies.
Jessica.... Love the idea of having a competition, then switching the onus on me. I just wish i had thought of it first

Not the onus Alan - the honour of the finer detail
Sky night is fine with me because then people can join in as and when. Blonde Jeannie did good tonight! And Mistley Colonel won at the stow too. Must go to sleep

I didnt want to chose between Blonde jeannie and my new hero. Kilkenny Lonjack 2nd at 8/1 Ninja Jamie finished behind both of them and Jamie is already third fav for the Derby !!!!!

Madness isn't it, but I cannot talk because my all the rage Burnpark Champ puppy went on to finish 2nd last week - however I am hoping he can recover from the setback tomorrow in the finals!

I'll join in on one condition. Someone provides me a link for the racecards, as I don't have access to SKY. If they are in the online Racing Post, then that'll be fine too.
Actually - I've just stopped being lazy and checked myself. Cards are there, so let me know when it starts etc.

Here is the Sporting Lifes Greyhound page. You can follow the links for cards.

What HAS happened to those - I am only beginning to learn to live without them and it's hard

greyhound data have been told to pay £20-30,000 per year to pay to use the race cards i think because they had a tote link betting service. That has now folded because of lack of use, so whether the race cards will come back is down to greyhound data.
and yes its damn hard to pick a winner off the other cards on offer that are free. betfair is the best though tbh.
