locking topics

I just wrote a reasonably long reply to the God squad topic only for it to be locked when i submitted it, thanks for wasting my time.
Is it any wonder this forum is getting smaller/less posts every week when the actual contributors are not allowed to voice opinions on daft subjects without some people getting offended, what is the point in having an off topic if we are not allowed to post about certain things.
I bet it is that admin mafia again that thinks there opinion is always the correct one so it must go without any actual rules of the forum being broken
Tagalie

The rules were repeatedly broken (swearing) and it was obviously touching some nerves.

Shame really, as I was hoping we could all convert to Paganism or Jediism.

Surely those posts should have been edited or deleted like some of them were not the whole topic being removed, it seemed like the god fearing christians were the ones that were taking most offence its just not christian like

Ah, so thats what it was, swearing.
I thought someone had become a martyr for the cause and had ritually disembowelled themselves, live on the forum.

Jediism, i like the sound of that 'the force is strong in this one'

IT IS ALL GODS FAULT(if he exsisted that is), why do you think the topic was deleted if someone had never wrote a story book named the bible he would never have been heard of so you would have never started the thread and it would not have had to have been deleted so it is his fault(if he exsisted)
Owl of Minerva

I'm with YY on this one. There was no good reason for it to be removed once the swearing had been dealt with. Are we going to remove any thread every time something slightly uncomfortable comes up. Whether or not Glennie's overall argument was a very good one is another issue, but he had every right to share what he said if he so desired.

It's also true that the forum seems to be getting quieter and quieter
alansouthcoast

Yaiyam, firstly, no one wasted your time on purpose. The thread was locked while you were posting. How was anyone to know you were about to post ?

As for the admin mafia comments, you should be ashamed of yourself. I never saw you moaning when any posts that were attacking you personally got deleted.
geordie_racer

problem is that some can debate these topics ina  sensible way and some can't

forum getting quieter might have more to dowith the poor racing at the moment and the removal of some more humorous posters [mansfield, vs] for other reasons

certainly there does seem to be  a reluctance to let stuff ride; subject to bad language etc, I think we have to accept we are all adults.
Owl of Minerva

Also, who right does WMH have to say you are deleting it to protect Glennie's privacy? "We try and protect people's privacy" - I think we are all capable of deciding what we want to remain private about oursleves. So patronising.

And then to cap it all off "Is your wife ok with this?" - dear me, seemed like a very lame attempt at female solidarity. Everyone says things on here about their friends/family - do we need written permission in future?
alansouthcoast

Owl maybe its getting quieter because of all the B/s and insults being posted ? The problem with letting threads run, is peoole switch from debate to insults. Its easy to be critical of us, when you havent seen what we have deleted, or know the reason for it.

Take last week, i sent a Pm about a comment of yours, you kindly edited it out. No one else will have any clue what occured, save  anyone fast enough to read it, so they will just assume the big bad admin edited the post.

I don't think so. I don't think the amount of b/s and insults on here is a problem. It's probably the most civilised forum on the net! But it's in dnager of trying to be too puritanical imo and sucking the life out of it. Only my opininon but there it is.

I was moaned at the other week(by an admin member) for posting a result from a race abroad  and then told i should have been aware that other forum members did not have the pictures so not given the result so others could have watched the highlights so i just assumed that all admin actually know what everyone else is doing, can do or is going to do in the future(maybe with gods help) how wrong i was.

As for people attacking me in the past as far as i can remember i never actually complained about them doing it and they were actually breaking the guidelines so the posts were rightly deleted

A fair point Owl.

How are we trying to be puritanical. Every forum has guidelines, everyone who signs up for here can read them. Show me one post where we have deleted a post that was within the guidelines ?

The problem is always the same, what one person finds acceptable, someone else wont. Thats why we have the guidelines, all we can do is try and stick to those were possible.

By this reasoning why don't you delete every thread just in case there is something private written and that person may some day want it removed? You can't start guessing as to what posters may not want to stay here. If you post something on here that you later want removed it's a case of either;

1) tough tits - you should have thought before you posted
2) Delete it with the edit function
3) PM the admin and ask them to delete the post

It most certainly should not be

4) Admin decide for me what is too personal and so second guess me and then say you are "protecting my privacy" for me

Your line of argument is strange Alan considering you are often one of the first to compain about New Labour's intrusion into basic civil liberties etc.

Thats a very sneaky way in of voicing your opinion lochsong by including it in a statement
Owl of Minerva

I'm not being a prat ; I'm saying that I have a poblem with admin taking it upon themselves to decide what constitutes an "emotional post" and is therefore in need of removal just in case this emotional person later wants it removed. I think this is an inappropriate policy. As GR says, admin are making their job harder than it needs to be.
westmeadhawk

Owl, my comments that you rather refer to were meant to be read in the context of the thread remaining locked, but open for viewing.

As the thread was subsequently removed your comments don't make a lot of sense.

I also take exception to your remarks about "lame attempt at female solidarity" but will leave it there.

You may take it as read that I always try to act in the best interests of the board and indiviudal posters.  If you have any further issues you wish to lay at my door, please PM me or another mod.

Thanks for your co-operation.  WMH

Oh and BTW for you to call me patronising is inexplicable frankly.

I did feel sorry for the admins as soon as I saw the thread title as I guessed not everyone would be able to debate the subject politely. There were some issues raised that were uncomfortable- but could have been discussed without the swearing and underlying aggression.

I am sorry - I must have misunderstood the purpose of the feedback section!

I stand by everything I said. I found your post to Glennie to be patronising. "We try and protect our memebers privacy" -    yuk. I think we are capable of deciding for ourselves what remains private.

That is all.
alansouthcoast

Geordie, your pervious point was well made, asking if posters can edit. I am not sure they can, once there has been a reply. I am sure that once a reply has been made, its too late to delete your own posts, only admin or mods can do so.

As for making too much work, remember how the BBC was, with no moderating ? Thats why we are all here.
westmeadhawk

For goodness sake Owl, it was not a post to Glennie.

You have misunderstood as you say.

The thread was not removed for the reasons you say but so admins/mods could have time to think about it.

Nice point, i wish all posts, on any topic, could be made in such fashion.
Owl of Minerva

I've said my bit now. But let me put on record that if I ever post something that you judge to be "emotional" I'd rather you left it and didn't play god by removing it. So in answer to your question:

Quote:
Say you posted something at an emotional moment, then regretted making it public. Would you prefer we let it ride, or that we tried to protect your privacy ?

The answer is 'let it ride'.

I'm going to suspend the increasingly heated debate by locking the thread whilst we decide what to do.

As it is obviously making you angry that your posts are being deleted Glennie I will leave the latest post.  We do try to protect posters privacy but I assume you want this personal information left on a public forum.  Is your wife ok with this too?

For the record this was my post that Owl is concerned about.

I locked the thread.  I asked Glennie if he stood by his post.  I made the general point that we TRY to protect posters' privacy.

The thread was then sensibly removed and any dialogue continued using the PM system.  This was my attempt to leave the thread as it was by NOT deleting anything so I say once again Owl I don't know why you think I was being patronising.  I try to mod to the best of my abilities, I was at work at the time so couldn't spend an age on niceties.

If anyone feels directly patronised I would appreciate the feedback.

Thats a bit of a rash statement to make, without knowing exactly what happened yesterday. My own opinion is that the problems all stem from what people type. As i have said, we only work to the guidelines. The thread in question had insults on page one, getting progressively worse as the thread went on. We didnt pull the thread until page six. I would hardly call that overbearing moderation.

Its also questionable that the Forum is quieter, it has always had quiet and busy periods, depending on what time of year it was. The same weekend in 2006 there were 27 posts on the Racing thread, today there have been 104.

Glennie and George : I accept your point, and to be 100% honest, if it was up to me, i would have locked the thread at the start. Not because i dont want people to discuss contentious topics, but because i knew from experience how it would end up.

However, if i had done that, then the people who want to discus certain topics, would and indeed have ened up referring to Admin as the Mafia.

All of you involved in the thread need to remember this, it wasnt Admin  who started swearing, it wasnt Admin that started slinging insults. It was Admin that moved the thread, so we get abuse from both sides. I suggest if everyone wishes to talk about grown up topics, they act like grownups when posting. Frankly it would be easier for me to just delete the off topic section, at least i could then read the racing and not have to deal with all the crap.

Mmmmm, interesting to read there has been a bit of argy-bargy going on recently!

For what it is worth, I think it is too easy sometimes to forget that the mods give up so much of their spare time on here for little thanks in return.  Sure they are not above being given feedback if they have messed up as I am sure they would be the first to admit if they had.  I have crossed swords with the mods in the past, mainly due to me being a bit of a pillock on occasions, but personally given the fact that this board has given so many good things to its users for some time now I think we all need to remember how and why this place came to being in the first place.

I also think it is important to remember that the mods do not HAVE to do this, and without them this place would be gone.  I am sure that they have made mistakes but the mods in my opinion do a brilliant job.

geordie, if a new member introduces themself by posting something shocking/inflammatory, especially if it involves a horse's injury/death/retirement/withdrawal, you can take it for granted they're a troll. Acknowledging them in any way by posting any kind of response on their thread is what they want. Just alert a mod and ignore. Attention is what they want- like the unpopular kid at school who would eat grass/worms so people would notice them.

There is one user whose IP matches Stephennewsome. I cant prove if it is or isnt the same person, but i hope it isnt.

To be honest if i was certain i would name and ban the user, unless they could supply a link to where they got the "news" from. This is one reason we ask people not to post unsubstantiated stories. Many on here use the same IP though, so it may be the same case here.

Wouldn't it have been better not to have posted your original comment then???

Maybe, but in the spirit of openess i decided to keep users informed as to what i know. As i see it, i havent named anyone, so where is the harm ?

In my opinion, you have now raised the suspicion that the WUM was a reasonably well known member of the Forum.  But as you are not going to clarify one way or the other, the issue is left in limbo.  Just think it would have been better not to mention half a story.

Im not sure how you arrive at this, since i didnt mention how often anyone has posted. I just said we have two names sharing an IP.

This is only an if, but if it is indeed just one person, maybe they will get the hint and just stick to the one name. If not, no harm has been done.

Yes mate that's the one. Friggin horse just won't play ball will he  You'd have been onto a blinder that day. A banker 65/1 shot! I've taken a good look at the horse since then and I am so so sure that he's group class. Well done for spotting him so early anyway!
