Old Roan Chase

I might back Tartak.

Quote:
THE Totetentofollow Old Roan Chase looks set to be a star-studded affair if the 12 entered at thefive-day stage line up at Aintree on Saturday.

Knowhere bids for back-to-back wins in the Grade 2 limited handicap, after landing the spoils for trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies last year.

Nicky Richard's popular grey Monet's Garden will be hoping to improve on last year's seventh when he reopposes, as will 2008 Galway Plate winner Oslot (sixth), who will be joined by Paul Nicholls stablemate Kicks For Free in the 2m4f contest.

Arkle hero Tidal Bay will be bidding to make a winning return for Howard Johnson after finishing outside the places on his last two outings.

Don't Push It and Tartak both hit the mark at the course last time out and will be hoping to repeat the feat on Saturday.

Racing Post Chase winner Nacarat, Finger Onthe Pulse, Laskari, Tamarinbleu and Three Mirrors complete the line-up.

i'll be on with you and looks like this race could have a great line-up!

Tartak: proper horse
Warrsan

Wonder if this is a prep for Tartak ready for the Paddy Power next month?

Hi guys, A few of you have mentioned three mirrors for this. I was at Cheltenham last Friday when Three Mirrors ran in a 6 runner handicap chase over 3 mile. I backed it that day and it looked quite fancied but was out the back for the whole race, Graham Lee didnt move on him and he literally trotted over the line finishing 4th. Looked to me like it was a prep for something but not sure whether it will be this or the paddy power at cheltenham next month. Anyway by interesting to see how he runs if he lines up.

well thought of at Ferdy's they feel he has a big prize in him.
racingfanatic

I can tell you all that Tom George is super confident Tartak will win this...he will still go for the PPGC after but they are very keen on him for this Saturday...hopefully a decent price too.

Spoke to some of the stable lads this morning and they all echo Tom's comments...

I am going to get on him for this and the King George before this race as if he wins he will shorten dramatically....big IF obviously.
Owl of Minerva

Yes Tartak is a serious animal over a flat 2m4f and will surely be favourite on Saturday

Kicks for Free could be an interesting rival though at a bigger price given his superb record when fresh

Three Mirrors looked like such a non trier last time

Tidal Bay for me, if the wind op has worked as well as connections suggest then 158 is a pretty lenient mark to say he was rated 166 for the Arkle win. Won first time out for the last 3 seasons, c&d winner - what more can you want!

His back to be sorted?

Granted it's a handicap and he gets weight off virtually all of the others but he looks sure to be outclassed here.
racingfanatic

Has anyone seen the article in the Times with Tom George...?

Think it highlights how positive he is for the season...and I know Tartak is his number one...
racingfanatic

Update is that the stable are super confident...looks like being about 5/1

Not as good as I had hoped for...

only 8 runers so first 3 e/w.

Three mirrors has had a getle run out and will be fitter for that, the rest are all making seasonal debut

Monet's looks handicapped to the hilt, isnt the horse he was 2 years ago and off top weight this is asking a lot

Tidal Bay has class if he ids fit

knowhere won this last season and has won first time out the last 3 seasons but he carries a stone more this term and i thik that will be too much

dont push it, kicks for free and finger on the pulse are all beatable with the weight concession

so I think he can beat all of them with the exception of tartak and (if fit) tidal bay, which means that 14/1 looks a great e/w price
geordie_racer

well we all rejected the old horrse.

what a fantastic run by monets. a few bubbles burst there i think

good to see tidal bay back.

If you get any feedback from the yard on yesterday's effort, let us know...

I read this the other day and it totally put me off Knowhere for a TBP bet, having looked this morning I now see he was In actual fact on the same rating with only 1lb more than for his win last year.

yeah I took that comment at face value like you and assumed he was a stone higher in the ratings rather than simply carrying a stone higher in race compared to last year which doesn't mean a lot in my book. I wasn't interested in him anyway so I didn't lose anything

I think someone was Just trying to throw everyone else off to keep the price up for himself.
It cost me a fortune as i had been waiting a year for him to come back to this race.

It was worse than that glennie he had the same rating for both years 154 and this year he was carrying 11-10 compared to 11-09 last year.

VPU run in this last year, which is the reason the weights were compressed. I am guessing this is something all of us have overlooked at some stage in the past.
racingfanatic

Huge apologies...I didn't get a chance to speak to the yard yesterday but heard they were all very shocked with what went on at Aintree...

A few things came to mind....

1)  I have always thought a key strength on Tartak was his incrdible jumping and he jumped horrifically...perhaps rustiness, I know Sam rides him most days at home so that can't be an excuse

2)  The yard could be out of form, although they have't had enough runners and when watching it Williamson did say he looked magnificent.

3)  When I originally spoke to Tom he said straight out that this horse would win the Paddy Power Gold Cup...totally matter of fact about it.  It surprised me they were running him here as they would surely want to protect his handicap mark given it was probably too high anyway.  The yard were very keen on him on Saturday though.  I thought maybe Tom and Sam had had a chat and sent him out to get him fit for PPGC and just have a pipe opener but they risked raising his mark as I think it highly unlikely he will be dropped for that run.

I will hopefully find out if anything was amiss over the next couple of days and will of course let you all know.

Huge apologies once again to anyone who backed him!

No need to apologise for passing on a genuine tip. Horses make fools of us all, even owners and trainers. A week or two ago a local yard had a strongly fancied runner. They had another runner in a different race who had been working like a pig at home. You can guess which one won and wasnt backed by connections.

he only carried a pound more than exotic dancer last year. What we didnt look at wasa the pull Monet's had from Knowhere, from memory 5 or 6 pounds.

Does that explain the 30 lengths turn around then?
