people with a decent knowledge of smoke detector lawsI moved into a rented place on the 1st July 09. There are smoke detectors but the fittings to the ceiling are broken. The landlord hasn't bothered to sort it out at all. I assume this is illegal, anyone know?

Ring your local fire station, they should be able to supply and install free of charge.

I am a landlord. As far as I am concerned I am legally obliged to have working smoke alarms in the property.
I would also add that I make my tenants sign an official form stating that it is their responsibility to ensure that during their tenancy they are expected to regularly test and make sure the alarms remain in working order - that way I am covered if they do not replace the battery or are stupid enough to take the battery out.
If your landlord can't be bothered you may also want to check he has had relevant gas and electricity checks carried out. These are renewable annually also official documents which he is legally obliged to provide.

Just threaten to get the council inspectors in, the landlord will fix the smoke detectors soon enough.

My smoke detector is cunningly installed in the kitchen, nearly directly above the cooker. It goes off whenever I cook or use the toaster, whether it's burning or not, so I took it down. Thanks for reminding me to check out whether the local fire service will reposition it.
