PGA TOUR 2009-Transitions Championship 19th-22nd Mar

With the first tournament starting tomorrow Afternoon I thought it would be good If we could start a thread for this season for people to put in there selections for each weeks tournament.
So anyone got any selections or even already done somebody for this week?
archie mackenzie

anyone tell me why theres such a small field for the opening tournament
mercedes-benz??? its just normally for tournies theres about two pages of golfers to pick from but not this field
the santa smilies gone
away from the likely winners
i see our friend will mackenzie is in the field so i,ll chance a few pennies on a top ten finish.cheers archie.

Hi Archie.

I think this tournament is only for players who won a tournament last year.

Just the one bet for me so far.

JB Holmes @ 32
ngreggors

Villegas @ 12s for me.
Darren

I am going to have to back Zach Johnson every week from now on, so backed him at 50/1.

Also Ernie Els and Trevor Immelman.
qzy

This weekend is the Mercedes Championship in Hawaii, and it has tended to be a good idea to side with players that are "Match Fit" at this stage of the season.
It is quite a long course (7400+ yards) but the ball tends to go a long way, wind assisted, and the greens are quite large and fast. It is often well worth betting in running here as there is no cut, and the scores are made on the par fives and towards the end of the round so don't be surprised if players start badly and finish well.

I am dipping my toes in the water pre tournament with a couple of small bets...

Anthony Kim @ 9/1
This lad is only 23 but has already won twice on the PGA Tour, winning the Wachovia Championship and Woods' AT&T National. Kim ended 2008 in great form, losing a playoff to Hunter Mahan in New Zealand and a clutch of third-place finishes (BMW Championship, Tour Championship, Kolon-Hana Bank Championship in South Korea and the Chevron World Challenge). The only downside is that he hasn't played here before (the tournament is only open to the previous years winners), but he hits the ball a very long way and scores well on par 5's, so this course should suit him fine.

Trevor Immelman @ 25/1 EW
Immelman went a bit mad (a technical term  ) in the months after winning the Masters, but he finished the year with six top-10 finishes in his last seven events, the first two in the PGA Tour playoffs and the last two in South Africa. He finished third behind Singh and Scott here in 2007, and I think his game is back on an fairly even
keel. He is a sweet ball striker and knows how to win.
YAIYAM

Will Mackenzie has been here before and played well so he could be one of the bigger priced players to watch out for & Justin Leonard also tends to play reasonably well at this tournament and was in good form at the end of last season so no reason why he will not be challenging apart from lack of length

hello harchie
for your help
may i ask hows michael o neil doing over there??
i know he,ll be judged mainly on hes results on the park but hows he coming across in interviews, meetings etc,i,ll make some coin on yous this year     cheers archie.
archie mackenzie

plenty of birdies and a few eagles in the first round
ive just read that out of 33 players,20 finished under par
may i ask those who punt on golf regular
do you say pick between 5-10 players at the start of the tournament and then lay and back according to the scores or maybe wait until the later rounds and then pounce on the profit just wondering has this tournament looks like it could well be wide open until the final round.cheers archie.
Machiavellian

I usually back about four then just see how things develop. Usually have a price in my head that I'd like to lay at, depending on the player and the situation.

He's coming across very well Archie.Saying all the right things but as you would expect he will be judged by results when the season kicks off in March. We should have the use of our new stadium for the start of the season so its an exciting time for us Hoops fans.I see your lads are having a mixed season. How are they playing.
archie mackenzie

hello harchie
funny old game aint it
we aint been seen so far this year due to the weather but our last home performance was the best in donkeys even thou we lost
im   has our friends ladcrooks had albion at 3-1 on there coupon so most of the home support (gambling folk, took the 3-1 expecting a humping)but the boys responded tremendously after the departure of our caretaker manager davie hannah (awful) and put up a great battling performance but even thou the performance was good we just didnt look like scoring the goals to peg albion back,so dissappointed with the result but well   with my punting returns
weve got a new forward on loan from killie, cox, so hopefully fingers crossed and he can hit the road running with a few goals
should win 2morrow but theres much better punting opportunitys in the cup games
sorry for going on has ive had a few pints and just waiting for the golf to start, watch this for a few hours and then up the dances.cheers archie.
archie mackenzie

just checked yesterdays scores and blimey this course is just to easy   it looks like that every player could finish under par   surely a championship course should test these players alot more????
talk about a easy start to the season.cheers archie.
YAIYAM

I have had a look at this weeks tournament and think with his course form KJ Choi did well enough last week to suggest he should be up there at this tournament once again.
Another player who seems to always play well here is Jerry Kelly but he is a bit more of a risk as lately he is just as likely to miss the cut as be challenging but never the less he has a win here and numerous top 10's
Darren

Sony Open

Zach Johnson 32
Steve Stricker 23
Tim Wilkinson 130

Abu Dhabi Championship

Andrew McLardy 80
Oliver Wilson 50
Peter Hanson 50
qzy

Kim gave me a run for my money last week but could never recover from an average front 9 on the Thursday. He will win this year though..

The Sony is the first full field event of the year, and is a very different course that the Mercedes is played on. The greens are much smaller than those at Kapalua and the course is much tighter and less hilly. This should suit the shotmakers rather that the Boo Weekleys of this world. One stat of interest is that 7 of the last 10 winners also played in the Mercedes, which shows the advantage of a few competitive rounds.

It is hard to ignore the claims of Ernie Els this week, and the 10/1 available is fair enough. Fifth at Kapalua on Sunday, and would have been a lot closer if he had holed a few putts on the Saturday, he has won the Sony Open in 2003 and 2004, and was runner-up in 2005. Butch Harmon has been making changes to his game and it seems to be starting to pay off.

I think DJ Trahan is overpriced at 66/1 but his course form is just enough to convince me to leave him alone this week. He tends to struggle with the putter at times so these greens won't suit him.

Strange comment re Boo Weekly. He's one of the best shot makers around but just cant putt.

Gone for 4 outsiders to start with

S.Lowery @ 350
T.Wilkinson @ 160
T.Pernice @ 180
G.Kraft @ 650
qzy

It looks as if Els has forgotten how to putt this week with the pressure of carrying some of my cash...  . I have backed Adam Scott EW @ 33/1 just there to hopefully give me some interest over the weekend

I made the comment above mainly because Boo has not played well here - up until this week!

Yep not bad only having to wait 2 tournaments into the season before he wins.
Well Done
Darren

Yeah, 6th and a 1st....not a bad start to the year for him. Seems to be a very good front-runner and nothing seems to phase him, very much one to trust on a Sunday.

And there are not many that I would personally say about.
YAIYAM

I was a bit annoyed with myself this week after the 3 i did missed the top 10 by either 1 or 2 shots while at the same time other players who were the same price which i also liked did make the top 10.
I chose Allenby over Casy in Abu Dhabi which was not only a mistake but poor gambling by myself because they were both 5/2 so i could have done both & Marino in the Sony Open should have been a bet at 9/2 as well
YAIYAM

Just started off with Troy Matteson and will see how he gets on before the cut before I look to add anymore.
Top 10 as well.
Darren

Rory Sabbatini for me.

Also got some Charley Hoffman.
YAIYAM

Have not got involved yey but the obvious 2 would seem to be Weir & Furyk who both have good records here but i cannot bet on 20/1 shots in golf.

Jeff Klauk seems to be going well this season for a rookie and may keep getting better & Charles Warren would be Interesting if he kept his form from last week up and went back to how he was playing in 2007.
John Mallinger & Kevin Sutherland both have some good course form but would take a big leap of faith to go with either of these 2 on there recent results

I can. I'm only on Weir for this one. And Paddy Power are paying top 6 so that is where my cash has gone this week.

Got WC Liang over in Malaysia as my longer shot this week (66/1)
awaywardlad

AT & T

D-J Trahan & Dustin Johnson

Malaysia

J.Randhawa

All ew @ 50/1+
YAIYAM

ngreggors

I am not sure If you use Betfair but you really should for Golf betting as It makes a huge difference i.e last week you could have got a bigger price on Watney on the back 9 of the last round than what you did before hand + once a player gets anywhere near the lead you virtually cannot lose.
With Weir being less than 20/1 even for first 6 the price is not going to be that much smaller to make the Top 10.

Have gone in on Weir as he did look really obvious and as you seem to fancy him as well there's no point in missing a good opportunity especially as 16/1> does not look under value as the 4 priced up in front have hardly played well this year and Firyk I don't think has even been out yet.
Charles Warren is my big one so lets hope he is back to something like he was playing a couple of years ago or even last week would be good.
Darren

Miek Weir too.

Also Paul Goydos at 150.
YAIYAM

Darren wrote:

Goydos is a local is he not?

I can never remember if it was Goydos or Perez who was leading this tournament by about 3 shots on the last Tee and drove it out of bounds and ended up losing.
YAIYAM

To answer my own ? above i think it was Pat Perez in 2002 he took something like an 8 or 9 on the last hole.

I guess they will be playing in 2 balls tomorrow(pro's) as there will still be the 25 leading teams so Weir's birdie on his last hole today could be significant as he will now definately be in the last group.
YAIYAM

I may have made a really good decision yesterday even though 15 minutes after i did it i was not so sure and was thinking it may be a mistake to have done so.
I laid Mike Weir @ 7.0 and backed Dustin @ 1.72 to give a good green figure on both Just before he started his 18th hole only for him to birdie that hole and come down to 5.0.
Now with the weather being really bad and them saying it may end as a 54 hole tournament, to my understanding that lay will stand where as if i had waited until the end of play and laid @ the 5.0< those bets would be void if there was no more play in this tournament.
Either way i am sat here with the top 2 players although that probably means very little if they do play in bad conditions.
awaywardlad

I'm very happy for it to be a 54 hole tournament
ngreggors

Looks like one of us should be in for some decent cash anyway!!

I am £660.24 on Johnson £3716.5 on Weir so would be very happy if they stopped  @ 54 holes

I backed Weir before started and as said above was extremely lucky to lay him back and use that money to back Johnson abot 1 to 2 hours before round 3 was finished so those bets will count.

Obviously some people will have done well out of this but some will probably have been hit pretty hard but either way it shows the massive difference and advantage Betfair has with Golf betting over bookmakers
YAIYAM

Weir could be in with a shout again this week as I am pretty sure he has won this tournament before and obviously is in form.

I will have to have a look before a put the £'s down though.
awaywardlad

ngreggors wrote:

Very strangely for me in golf I backed Dustin(50/1) Randhawa(55/1) and DJ Trahan(50/1) all ew  with Stan James and not Betfair.Happily too the only other bet I made in the tournament was to back Weir with Betfair @ 2.68 for a top 5 finish after the second round.

Haven't looked yet ast this week's events although as YY says Weir is in form and if he has won it before he could be worth a punt but price will determine. Will post fancies later in the week.
YAIYAM

Weir does look the obvious one in this but when players start playing well you soon get a false price over the on going weeks as i always think apart from Woods no player should be under 20/1 in a strong field.

Jeff Quinney has played well here twice with only one round over 70.
Its not an overly long course but quite tight so you need fairway & GIR hitters.

Anyone else come up with anyone
awaywardlad

Weir has obvious chances but as you say YY too short for my liking(will look at Weir again after rounds 1/2 to see if any value)

So it's Allenby & Quinney(agree a value bet) in the US &

less confidently O'Malley & D.Howell(both 100/1 ++) in Australia.

Good luck
harchiefan

KJ for me at Riviera and David Smail in Perth.
ngreggors

Weir & Rollins in the US
Liang & Green in Oz

Lefty now 4 shots clear and 1.38 to lay on Betfair.

VS still laying???

Intersting finish ,lefty not driving well ,8 to play and leading by just one ,next hole really important as its a par 5

lefty is in trouble lost a four shot lead and trails by one
ngreggors

This is compulsive viewing.
Mickelson has gone from 4/1 to 2/5 in the space of 10 minutes on PP.
harchiefan

Typical lefty.Starts with an eagle, then plays crap golf for 14 holes, falls 2 behind, stitches it for bird on 16 and then birdies 17 to go one ahead.

Brilliant viewing. My pick KJ's putter was as cold as ice all week.Shame.

Would love to see a playoff now.

lefy just needs a par at the last to win it ,nail biting stuff
ngreggors

Unless Fred makes a birdie

edit - Which aint gonna happen now!!

Up & down for Big Phil then.
YAIYAM

Anyone playing on this tournament this week, I am starting off with 2 rookies who have been playing well this season and also did well in the Honda Classic, the first tournament in Florida this year.
Jeff Klauk @ 130.0>
Scott Piercy

Only Snedeker @ 160 for me to start with .

Damien McGrane at 25/1 in Madeira.

Watney & Petterson in the US
Garrido & Broadhurst in Madeira

got a free tenner bet with Stan James ,so threw a fiver ew on Kenny Perry.25s the blackprint price . one of my fav players ,streaky but when Kennys hot he sticks around the top of the leaderboard
Mate reckons a win for Furyk is just around the corner ,followed his round yesterday and he was getting some really long puts, some for only par .bookies have gone really short on him ,yet there are still 54 holes to play ,Jim still hasnt won for a year ,possible lay at such a short price
