putting something back into the sport

Not only do i sponsor a greyhound every year, this week we've gone and got ourselves a retired one he's called sol, after ole solskjear (or something along those line) was was his racing name in the uk when he was flapping and he was called spell bined in ireland before he was bought over here.

he's a cracking dog i would recommend one to anybody and i would have more if we could.

heres a picture of him:

well done Catbiscuit

He looks a cracker, how old is he?  I was planning on getting a grey and then ended up with a lurcher through an Irish charity.  One day though

One thing I can guarantee, you are going to have fun!

Who do you sponsor through?

he's 4 in april, just getting him use to be being left on his own etc.

tbh he's ''potty trained' as their taught not to poo in there kennels, been good with little fella and has a top temprament. i've never seen a dog not arsed about going for a walk. would love to have another but we dont have the room. When we went to the merseyside rgt they had a brother and sister called jip abd jig we'dve love to have had them.

i sponsor a dog called dawn through the rgt website.

Ah, they get over that separation thing in course, it's early days.  My friends over the road were advised to ignore their rescue for 30 mins before going out and then for a bit when coming in.  I found mine was better when left with some of the internal doors open as not being able to see out made him worse.  Anyway I am sure Sol will let you know about his preferences.

Thanks for the info about sponsoring, I'll look into it more.

no probs, you get a xmas & valatines day card off your sponsored dog too.

we have a baby gate in the kitchen (where he sleeps) so he can see straight through into the hall way, he seems to have really sunk him with him the past few days that we come back.

Not stupid are they.  Mine pops his head through the curtains when we get back from his look-out spot (spare bedroom at the front).

Lurchers jump so baby-gates aren't so good.  I used them with my old lad though.  I am so glad for you and your family catbiscuit

sol will pop his head round the corner sometimes just to check your there then go and lie back down.

Pity you aren't nearer, they could have enjoyed a gallop once the recall thing is established.

I've been meaning to put up pics of mine for months.  Will do so asap!

I think that is the standard advice.  The trouble is with sighthounds is that once they have seen something they are gone and nothing in the world will bring them back until they are good and ready.  With ex-racers the genetic predisposition to chase is compounded!  I know people with ex-racers who let them off and some who don't.  I have a paddock type enclosed place near me which is fine and sometimes we live dangerously and let him off in a country park.  The beach is ok too, but never near a road and never near dogs I don't know (small ones especially).  I expect it is better to be safe than sorry with a rescue.

We'd love to see  sol in full flow but unless we can find a fully enclosed area its a no go for me. the nearest we can see him in full flow is grey hound data and looking at his irish races (under spell bounded if you want a look).

it a shame really as there made to run.

I have posted the link catbiscuit if that's ok? so I can look at him again when I can see straight!  The final in Harold X is fantastic, I thought he might just get caught but he was a brave man there.

I'll look at the others after a night's sleep.  Give him a pat from me

i used to have two retired greyhounds  a bitch and a dog and the bitch looked just like sol,a friend of mine in england last year got one and was keeping him in the house and after 4 days he got out and ran to the local park, they could not catch him as they could not get near enough to him, they even spent allnight in the park trying, after three days they went to the door to go to the park again and he was outside waiting ,they now take him out and let him of the lead and he comes back to them, about three years ago when i was left with just one i came home from work in the afternoon and i have got a drive with a bend in it with thick bushes i drove up to the house and opened the door and my greyhound he just run straight past me i turn round and saw two sheep that had been on my blind side and he was chasing them so i shouted out his name in a stern voice and he stoped running and skidded about 4 yards ,just like in a cartoon, and came back to me i lost him about six months after that, but of
all the dogs i have had they are the most affectionate ,i will get some again when i have more time ,my god i'm soft got a tear in my eye
