Racing Wednesday 14th

I am going to follow all the Jim and John Best horses in the weeks ahead, they seem to be back to some sort of form and do well at this time of year. John concentrates more on the flat and has had a few winners in the last week, he has several out today.

I am also going to back Safari Adventures in the 3.45 Now trained by Lucinda Russell, this is an ex Peter Winkworth inmate, many have the "Safari" prefix. Recent form is just short of todays distance and also on gd/fm. Its fair to say he hasnt won at todays trip but he has got quotes in his form as " ran on readily " and "eased" at slightly shorter trips. He also has winning form on the heavy at over two miles. The Favourite is likely to be Evelith Echo but 4/1 or better on Safari Adventures could be a free bet E/w. I cant see him not getting a place at least.

Some good racing at Punchestown over the next few days.  The most interesting race today looks to be the Beginners Chase at 5:20, as Festival Winner Weapon's Amnesty is making his chasing debut.  Some other decent hurdlers are taking him on including Indian Pace, Brown's Bailey, Corskeagh Royal and Dancing Tornado.  I'm looking forward to seeing how Brown's Bailey gets on actually.  He looked like a chaser in waiting last year.

Following you in on the Best horses again Alan – a few weeks back I had tip for horse called Christopher Wren – ran terribly that day at big odds – gutted to see it reappeared on Monday and went in at 9-1 !!! – its due to run again on Friday night at Wolver or Monday at Ponteract…

With regard to this afternoon I like Black N Brew in the 1.30 so will be going with that.

P.S – Safari Adventures is NR now.

The Lingfield 2.00 is a right brain teaser!

Its a 2yo novice stakes and each of the four runners have a 100% win record.

All top trainers too.

Speaking of the Best stables, Jim has sent Hello Moscow to Wetherby for the 4.55. Thats a round trip of just over 500 miles from his stable in Lewis, Sussex. Considering it is the first time in a chase and the first run since being pulled up in March i think that is significant. The 3/1 second fav price seems about right.

Kings Colour in the 8.50 at Kempton was really fancied by connections last time. He found lots of trouble and was out of the money, having won his two previous races. I am expecting a better showing tonight and cant understand why he seems to be drifiting in price.

I was given Edgeworth (Kem 720pm) at 730am this morning. Could not get on PC until lunchtime and its been smashed in to 7's from 16s.

Still maybe worth a go but looks like it wasn't a well kept secret.

What an awful race at Wetherby the 15:45 was.

Marrel broke a leg after falling and was put down, Divex broke down and also had to be put down. Toms Toybox broke a fetlock and is in the balance and Striking Article injured after the finish.

Very sad and horrible to watch

Blimey I watched that race in-running, I didn't realise things were going to be that bad. Striking article bounded clear at the end, surprised he came out of it injured.

The whole day sounds bad - from Sporting Life:

FOUR DEATHS OVERSHADOW WETHERBY CARD

By Ashley Iveson, Press Association Sport

Racing at Wetherby today was marred by four equine fatalities at the first meeting at the West Yorkshire track of the new jumps season.

Marrel and Divex had to be put down after suffering injuries in the feature Bobby Renton Chase, while Nut Hand had to be destroyed following the first race and Miss Giboa broke a leg when falling in the last.

Clerk of the course Jonjo Sanderson said: "It's awful news and not the start we wanted.

"The trainers are not blaming it on the ground, or at least they haven't said that to me.

"The head groundsman is absolutely devastated. The course inspector was here today and everyone seemed happy with it."

They don't even mention Tom's Toybox and Striking Article.

Oh, I didn't even know about Nut Hand, and I was hoping Miss Giboa would get up ok after the last. Racing Uk said she was down but I didn't hear anymore.

Terrible day.

I know Wetherby has had its problems because of realigning the course after the new road was put in (is that right?) This is too many for one day, though, and although it MAY be bad luck, I do wonder about the way the course is riding. I note that no-one was worried beforehand about the state of the going. But is there something else going on (I think I am correct in saying that they had problems last season on the chase course)?

Any news on this, Geordie?

it isnt down to the course as i see it; this was the first time ferdy had allowed one of his to run at wetherby since they redid the track and he was happy with it after pistol's run; keith mercer had no adverse comments; havent heqrd anyone else

divex hadnt fallen, can't say what happened to him; the rest couldnt be blamed on the ground or teh course as far as i can see

i see from SL that Mickey hammond out divex's sad end down to "one of those things"

bad for wetherby but lets see if anyone is pointing out any problems; i wasnt aware that they were

Yet ANOTHER dog with fleas from the Luca Cumani yard.

Outspoken and overrated.

The British Horseracing Authority will investigate four fatalities on the opening day of the jumps season at Wetherby on Wednesday.

Marrel and Divex were put down after suffering injuries in the feature Bobby Renton Chase, while Nut Hand and Miss Giboa were also destroyed.

The Yorkshire course is due to host the Charlie Hall Chase on 31 October.

"The course inspector was here and everyone seemed happy with it," said Clerk of the course Jonjo Sanderson.

"The trainers are not blaming it on the ground, or at least they haven't said that to me.

"Micky Hammond (trainer of Divex) said it was just one of those things and it wouldn't stop him running horses here again.

"We will have to liaise with the British Horseracing Authority to see what, if anything, we can do before the Charlie Hall meeting."

The Wetherby track has undergone £50,000 of renovations to improve the state of the ground following criticism last season.
