Now this is truly in the sporting spirit!I've been very busy so haven't had a chance to post this up yet but this woman is amazing. She was called upon to help out & did so even though it meant going completely in the wrong direction for a few days. OK so she's received time bonuses for doing so(and so she should) but even so it has hindered her chances somewhat! I'm not sure this would happen in any other sport!
Sports Personality Of The Year 2009 would be a no contest if I had anything to say on the matter
Do agree Jimbob - she altered course as soon as she knew there was a problem, and made rendevous with the injured man even though she could do nothing to help him directly or get him off the boat. It is apparently (and I can believe it!) vitally important that someone as seriously injured as that knows that he has support alongside. I cannot imagine what agony he was in - broken femur and nothing he could do......she or another sailor who also went to the rescue did manage to chuck some water bottles within his reach - I gather he managed to put the boat on automatic pilot before he crawled to his cabin. But had no access to morphine. Unimaginable, in the southern ocean, and the good news is he has now been picked up by the Australian ship and has medical help.
Good luck to her, and to the other sailor (French I think) who also went to his aid.
