Schumacher to return to F1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Schumacher to return to F1
Wed 29 Jul, 07:00 PM

Seven-time F1 champion Michael Schumacher is set to return to the sport for the European Grand Prix in Valencia after Ferrari confirmed that the German driver is its choice to replace the injured Felipe Massa.

Schumacher, the most successful driver in the history of the sport, quit F1 at the end of the 2006 season but will now come out of retirement to make a comeback as Massa continues to recover from the injuries he sustained in his accident at the Hungaoring.

In a short statement, Ferrari revealed that Schumacher will shortly begin a specific training programme, which will be followed by confirmation that he will partner Kimi Raikkonen in the Spanish race.

The news comes just a day after Schumacher’s manager Willi Weber said he was '200 per cent sure' that the most successful F1 driver of all time wouldn’t be on the grid in Spain.

However, Schumacher said he ‘couldn’t ignore the unfortunate situation’ that Ferrari now finds itself in following Massa’s accident and has agreed to make a return after meeting with Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo and team boss Stefano Domenicali.

"The most important thing first: thank God, all news concerning Felipe are positive,” Schumacher said. “I wish him all the best again.

“I was meeting this afternoon with Stefano Domenicali and Luca di Montezemolo and together we decided that I will prepare myself to take the place of Felipe. Though it is true that the chapter Formula 1 has been closed for me since long and completely, it is also true that for loyalty reasons to the team I cannot ignore that unfortunate situation.

“As the competitor I am, I very much look forward to facing this challenge."

Don't know what to say! Relieved that the news on Massa is relatively OK

Half excited at seeing Schui race again, half terrified!

How many races are left anyway?

I hope Ferrari don't put Schumacher ahead of Kimi in the pecking-order

There were quite a few murmurs on betfair about this, I'm delighted it's true. Schumacher, top man

AMAZING!

Wow, that is a shock, last I saw his manager said he was "200% sure" Schumacher wouldn't drive.

I wonder if he's had a fitness test and that's what's done it? He had a motorbike accident earlier in the year and injured his neck and yesterday his spokeswoman (diff to manager!) was saying he'd consider it but they weren't sure his neck could take the forces.

Absolutely wow.

That's really going to pee Kimi off.
geordie_racer

nothig to do with anything else but Massa's acciodent. ferrari have been using him as a consultant of course and I believe he has been testing throughout the time;

one thing for sure the car will improve for his input and the first wet race he drives in is a mortgage job.

After all the open warfare between the governing bodies and teams it is good to see something happening on the circuit for a change.
This is just the icing on the cake for what has been one of the most newsworthy seasons of all time.
Not usually pleased to see a German but will definitely make an exception for Schuey

He is the natural choice when you think about it, Who else of the same quality can they get. I can't see him being above Kimi in the team. Yes, he's the greatest driver ever to to put on a pair of gloves but at this moment in time, he's a temporary solution to an unforeseen problem. Kimi should be their Number 1 Driver. But I'm delighted to see him back all the same

Now, not going to happen because of his long standing neck injury
Shame

I wonder whether the neck actually is the isue; maybe he has discovered he no longer has the reflexes / hunger / desire to risk himself.... it does happen

Mrs S may have some part to playin this too... "why bother?" may be her position and the kids will have been asking him not to go....

Finally how about not tarnishing his own reputation after going out at the top

you just never know.

THE KING IS BACK!!! LONG LIVE THE KING!!!

And you call yourself an Englishman!!?

Anyway, I thought you were in love with the red marque. (Ferrari)
Rowan

Just seen him interviewed on the news - that's the happiest I've ever seen Schumacher look, he was almost glowing.

Should be very interesting... what are the prices on the 2010 drivers championship?

Although he does seem to have been handicapped - according to Brundle he's going to have to "pedal really hard" - couldn't they give him a car with an engine??

Why am I not an Englishman? Because I appreciate a sportsman who isn't English?

I am a Ferrari fan and as such love Schumacher and all he has done for us. I wish him all the best as I'm sure all(true) Ferrari fans will

Hmmmmm

Sporting isn't quite the way I would describe some of Schuey's past maneouvers on the race track, particularly when he has the championship within his grasp bar losing one race.

But whatever turns you on brother.

lochsong

Bernie E must be dancing around his living room with a bottle of Dom Perignon in his hand.

Brawn GP wins championship.

Mercedes buys Brawn GP

Button leaves Brawn for McLaren to join Hamilton

M Schumacher joins old pal Brawn at Mercedes gaff.

You couldn't make it up.

I've half a mind to buy tickets for this year's race at Silverstone.
