Tesco go it alone!Thousands of jobs could be on the line after Tesco opened the first supermarket without any checkout staff in Northampton.
Tesco's latest Express stores features five self service tills-supervised by just one member of staff.
Shopworkers union Usdaw said it feared Tesco was setting a precedent to cut checkout staff and would raise concerns with the company.
But Britains biggest supermarket chain insisted the same store with staff checkouts would employ the same number of people.
Sainsburys said it had no plans to introduce any exclusively self service stores because its customers liked a choice between automated and staffed checkouts.
An Asda spokesman said 'hell will freeze over'before it followed Tescos lead.
