The greatest goal....Van Basten for me, or Maradona against England, just for individual ability. The Brazil 1970 (Carlos Alberto) one gets trotted out a lot for the team effort (or lack of) within it. Playing devils advocate, it always seems to me the Italians let them play....
There are several that I could think of that I am sure I have built up in my own head over time to be better than they are, like the Gazza free kick in the Cup semi against David Seaman. Also, in the 1990 world cup, I thought Stojkovic scored a free kick that bent as much as the Carlos one in 1998. However, I saw it again 15 years later, and was nothing like I remembered it

It's probably wrong to choose one so some honorable mentions, Tony Yeboah against Wimbledon, Bergkamp against Newcastle and also his hattrick against Leicester.
But one of my favourites is Matthew le Tissier's against Newcastle, superb ball juggling :-

Bergkamp for Holland against Argentina in the 1998 (i think) World Cup, when he controlled the cross, moved the ball on to the other foot, turning the defender inside out and slamming it into the top corner.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESl0-qZxlik
Bit of a funny story attached to it - lets just say i was in a bit of a compromising position with the girlfriend on top, and her not realising i was watching the game over her shoulder with the sound turned down. Bergkamp scored, i shouted out, and got rumbled......
Cheers

I wish I could take that seriously.
"best goal" has to include context, quality of opposition etc.
It was a fantastic goal.
not as good the greatest ever goal which was of course Jackie Milburn's run from the half way line in the 1951 cup final, but still a fantastic goal

It was a fantastic goal. I was just putting it out there that it was the 4th goal, and the Italians may have been standing off somewhat. I dare say you know more about the context of the game and how good the Italians were.
(I was going to put a joke in the original post about you bringing up a goal from Newcastle in the 50's, but didn't bother )

Mine has always been Eder's winner against the USSR in the 1982 World Cup. Fantastic skill and a stunning strike and no matter how many great goals I've seen in the following years, nothing ever knocks it off my opinion of being the best goal (certainly my favourite.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3RB9ZeBvNXs
As an added treat the video below is 5m47s of the GREATEST entertainers the World Cup has ever seen (IMO) If you remember fondly the 1982 Brazilian team as the best side never to have won the WC* (and a damn side better than a few who have) then take yourself back down memory lane. If you're too young to remember 1982, then you're in for a real treat. My favourite football team of all time who scored 15 stunning goals in the tournament (plus the person who put the video together also had Eder's at #1 - good taste!)
Enjoy!!!

I was there the day Dennis Bergkamp scored his hat-trick at Filbert Street, the last goal imparticualr was sublime. Lilian Nalis' thunderbolt volley against Leeds is one that sticks in the memory.

I saw that earlier Mach and I hadn't seen it before either. I always thought the John Buchanan goal you posted further up the thread was City's "greatest ever" but that Peter King strike is something else!

That is something else - my jaw dropped when I saw it and I've replayed it 3 times. What is shocking is that it's never shown on TV!
Going to go and find a few more.......

for some reason this goal sticks in the memory and Haan had a bullet shot

Haan's is a great strike but the wonder goal from '78 has to be Nelinho's. The only reason you need that the Third Place Play-Off must always remain at the World Cup!
