The Hong Kong Cup (& other races 13 Dec 2010)

Shaping up to be a nice little competitive race this year with some strong contenders set to run as ive just read Vision D'Etat is going to compete along with last years winner Eagle Mountain and Presvis of course. Be a nice price with Vision on the tote as the locals will know all about EM and Presvis and no doubt pile into them leaving him alone. Presvis is having a warm up race at lingfield on the 21st november

Channon is now sending Youmzain for the Vase and Lahaleeb is going for something as well. Both of those could turn out to be competitive at nice prices.

Royer Dupre is sending Sweet Hearth for the 7F race. No idea of the competition but with this man i bet shell win now or at the very least place and be a nice ew price.

Just thought id start a post now since i read a few articles on the rp and sporting life sites today. must have a glance at the hong kong jockey club website. Excellent site. I love the cards and info you get for the races in hong kong. great place to have a bet imo.

Presvis, Eagle Mountain and Scenic Blast all set to appear in the trial races in Hong Kong on the 22nd November as a prep for decembers big meet:

PRESVIS ACCEPTS HONG KONG INVITE

Presvis is one of four international runners invited to the the Cathay Pacific International Cup Trials by the Hong Kong Jockey Club.

Luca Cumani's charge will contest the Cup Trial on November 22nd. Scenic Blast and Apache Cat are heading to the Sprint Trial - Scenic Blast, Apache Cat while Eagle Mountain will contest the Mile Trial.

"We are very pleased to have attracted top class names from three major racing jurisdictions for the first Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International trials open to overseas horses," said William A Nader, the Club's Executive Director of Racing.

"These trials were opened to improve the preparation of horses guaranteed a start in the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Races and it's terrific that we have been met with such a positive response.

"Three of these horses have been to Hong Kong before and their participation in the trials will help reacquaint Hong Kong fans of their capabilities before the big day on 13 December."

Scenic Blast, already in Hong Kong, will collect a US$1m bonus should he win the HK$12m Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint having already won series legs in the Lightning Stakes and the King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot.

On his latest start, the Sprinters Stakes in Japan, the Western Australian star met with severe interference and finished down the field.

Apache Cat, an eight-time Grade One winner and former champion sprinter in Australia, finished third in the CXHK Sprint last season and tuned up for his latest Hong Kong mission by landing Schweppes Stakes (Gr.2-1200m) at Moonee Valley at the weekend.

Damien Oliver is expected to ride him in both the CX International Sprint Trial and the CXHK Sprint itself.

Eagle Mountain, meanwhile, will return to the scene of his triumph in the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Cup last season.

Mike de Kock's champion has been off the track since that famous victory but the South African handler is keen to tackle the CX International Mile Trial to mirror Eagle Mountain's successful return after a similarly lengthy layoff last year in the Joel Stakes at Newmarket.

Eagle Mountain making his reappearance after injury in the mile trial race this weekend as his prep for the Cup defence. Won at a mile last year first time out in a G3 at Newmarket. This doesnt look to be that strong so price depending ill be having a bet via the tote through betfair. Sacred Kingdom in the Sprint trial will be tough to beat back on home soil after his slightly dissapointing trip to ascot in the summer. Presvis is also making a prep run at lingfield carrying weight.

Vision D'Etat is confirmed as a runner for the Cup next month. Shaping up to be a very good race. Local challenge led by Viva Pataca and Collection verus the foreign raiders Presvis, Eagle Mountain and Vision D'Etat. I think Vision is likely to be a very good price for this and imo the one to beat with a slight class edge over the others and Presvis likely to be having to come from behind.
lenahan

Dont know if anyone else is about this morning.

Now about to back Eagle Mountain at a rather silly imo 10/1 over in Hong Kong. Won first time out at newmarket last year over a mile in a G3 and this Hong Kong trial race doesnt look so strong. Nothing here to fear. Speculative but at this price he is worth a punt imo. Would be surprised if he didnt place.

805pm Sha Tin
Eagle Mountain 10/1

Nothing missed there. Lots of late money into 4/1 and ran last. Obviously not fit and over a trip short of ideal but be a surprise if he is to win the cup of the back of that now imo.

Inspiration is a big price at 12/1 to topple Sacred Kingdom and Happy Zero in the Sprint trial next up.
lenahan

Very Impressive from Happy Zero there. He and Sacred Kingdom will be tough to beat next month. Cant see the winner coming from elsewhere.

Damn were these races on atr this morning?  I've gone into hibernation mode. Looking forward to the big races though!

Nah they were not shown gromero. I would think the real things will be next month though as they were last year. If not the HKJC site is really good and you can watch and listen live there with previews etc as well.

Some antepost prices available with the Uk bookies now for the Cup. Some difference of opinion with the qouting prices. Ladbrooks obviosuly very sweet on collections chances having him 2/1 fav when others are no shorter than 7/2.

Here are best prices available:

Presvis 7/2
Collection 4/1
Viva Pataca 4/1
Vision dEtat 6/1
Eagle Mountain 10/1
Thumbs Up 12/1
Packing Winner 33/1
Mr Medici 50/1
Unique Jewellery 50/1

Im really am sweet on Vision Detat for this. Even 6/1 is nice but i really hope we could see a double figure price on the tote.
gromero

This is over 10 isn't it?
Completely agree I'd really fancy Vision D'Etat at those prices.

Yes its over 10F.

My thinking is that Vision Detat and presvis are quite a little bit better than Eagle Mountain anyway of the foreign runners. Plus with Eagle Mountains dissapointing prep run reappearance from injury the other day i doubt he is going to be spot on for this anyway which he would need to be to compete.

Presvis has obviously been campaigned with this race in mind. But Vision has had a light campaign with only 4 runs and had more than enuogh time to be freshened up again after the arc. Being ready shouldnt be an issue and he isnt travelling for fun. He has travelled well before and of course won at ascot back in the summer. Officail ratings dont have a great deal between him and presvis and i think thats fair. Probably about right. Importantly for this race presvis is going to be coming from a long way back and cant afford any trouble in running. Vision in contrast will be ridden close to the front. Presvis will struggle to get past him before the line even with a clear passage. The draw is a big factor but youd hope the one you are on gets a good starting stall.

Ill accetpt Presivs could have improved beyond what he is rated but that is yet to be seen and to be honest his collaratal form is nothing impressive imo. Vision looks booked at least for a place imo and of course he is and will be over there an each way price. Presivs could beat him but even so Vision is definetly the bet.

The only local runner that looks a threat is collection. Viva Pattacca looks past it now and even at this best he would struggle to compete with Presvis and Vision. None of the other local runners should be able to win against these being mentioned so for me its one of Vision, Presivis or Collection to win. Eagle Mountain if boucning back has a good chance. The overseas runners in this should have a definete class edge so ultimetly i would be surprised if even collection was quite good enough. Im really quite bullish about Vision and can only see presvis beating him. Even if the draw scuppers him i cant have him out the frame. He is a very good G1 10F horse.
lenahan

Just under two weeks now till this meet.

Ashalanda looks a very interesting contender for the Cup should she turn up. She is rated 7llbs on offical ratings behind the top rated Vision. And yet this is the exact amount she will receive being the bottom weighted in the field. With these connections (Royer Dupre & Aga Khan) she has to be given serious respect. The jockey bookings could be interesting although they may not tell us much. If lemaire is on board as youd fully expect then shes probably an each way back if she gets a good draw. The draw especially and the pace is going to be the Key in this race  I could see her going close and with all the money that will no doubt pile onto collection, presvis, eagle mountain, the other hong kong horses and vision ahead of her in the market she could just be a ridiculous price on the HK tote (50/1 upwards even). In fact id be very surprised if she was much less than 20/1 on the tote and even that would be a far too big a price for her. This could be a huge priced winner for us to get onto on the board. Im not sure if 10F is really her trip but it will likely be worth paying to find out.
lenahan

In fact all of the Royer Dupre runners are going to need to be given serious respect at this meet. Especially the Aga Kahn ones.

He has Sweet Hearth running in the mile after being re targeted here instead of the breeders. She was last out when beating Goldikova into 3rd on Arc day. She is more or less best rated at the weights in the mile race only 2llbs behind Good Ba Ba. He looks almost impossible to beat and it would be surprising should any other Hong Kong runners finish in front of her. This horse could be the only one to do it imo and she will also be a big each way price one would think out there. She is 20/1 here at the moment which is not shabby.

Daryakana goes in the Vase and on the wieght adjusted ratings comes out ahead of everything execpt Youmzain. She is 10/1 with the Uk bookies so again youd expect at least better with the tote. 10/1 here looks huge to me at the moment though. This race looks good with Spanish Moon and Bucalleti other runners of note from overseas.Cirrus des Aigles from france also looks an intriguing contender who is weighted nicely against the others. Surely should go to a foreign runner one would think.

This could be an exceptional meet for bagging some big priced winners on our european runners
lenahan

In contrast to thinking about HK tote prices Sacred Kingdom in the Sprint looks far too big at uk prices being an each way steal at 4/1. If you think Scenic Blast is going to bounce back from injury he is also huge at 8/1. Both of these Sacred Kingdom certainly should be much much shorter in the race day pools. He started at his biggest ever price in the Hk pools the other week in the trial race. That was 2/1 and even then that was with the newcomer Happy Zero who is a new hotpot in the race. Happy Zero is off to race in the mile and will have a good chance so it would be a surprise to get much better than evens/6/4 on sacred kingdom in this sprint race. He will get hammered in the pools. He usually goes off at odds on and id almost expect the same here again. Odds on usually reflects his true chances in these home sprint races so as said the Uk price looks very generous.

Only a few days away now. Stalls Draws should be either wednesday or thursday. These will be key for assesing the chances of horses properly. In the Cup 4-7 is Plum. Eagle Mountain won from 6 last year.

The HKJC site is about the best in the business. I love the form for races here. Especially the speed power assesment of pace etc. Easyform is pretty usefull and the tipsters are pretty good most times

Also There is a dedicated website for the meet:

http://www.cxhkir.com/english/hkir2009/main.asp

There should be a full PDF download for the meet with racecard and lots of other info but I havnt managed to find it yet.

There is loads to absorb from thoese above websites and plenty to digest of use for having a bet ;)
lenahan

All the draws were made thursday. Ill post up here asap. Stalls 4,5,6,7 are the plum draws for distances from a sprint up to 10F. Can still be importnat for longer trips but less so. Your better being drawn low than high. For the most part being drawn 9 or higher especially so in larger fields is a killer.

In the Cup Eagle got 1, Collection was highesst of all, Presvis got 9 and Vison got a plum 7! Collection is going to have to go the long way round and is really up against it. Eagle would be a surprise winner off his prep run. Presvis wasnt drawn great. Will be dropped out anyways but may have to come wide and avoid traffic. Vision has even had the draw go his way. He was an outstanding bet anyway. Even more so now the draw has been made. Perfect for him. Not so perfect for his main contenders.
FallonFacta

Sorry to be vague - Has Presvis been done by the draw before?  I have a vague memory of being beaten on the line...  He and Fallon can only improve on the last run!

I'm all prepared for the early start on Sunday - Bacon sarnies planned.  ATR will have this live - won't they?!?

Atr show the races about 10 minutes delayed. So get your bets on at least 10-15 mins early to make sure youre on. Betfair accept bets into the Aussie tote pools who have markets on the races. For the most part they reflect the pools in HK. Slight differences here and there but nothing great usually.

Betfair-Horseracing-Aus-Tote-ShaTinGallops

Then the Race Number (Cup is Race8)

Thats how i bet. There is no way to bet into the HK pools i know of but as said the Aus pools usually refelct them so this is how i do it.

Presvis had a tricky draw in Singapore back in April and didnt quite get up. The horse who beat him was no great world beater. Presivs is not one to back at too short odds imo. With his running style you are always susceptible to traffic problems and luck in running. A far from perfect draw here compounds that. If he tries to go to the inside he will need ALOT of luck to get the gaps. If he goes outside he has further to go ;)

Im really hoping Vision is left alone to a degree in the market and i can get a nice price on him. Presvis is the only one im fearfull of if he gets a good journey through the race. Id be very surprised if Vision Detat is out the top two. Couldnt be more bullish.

The 2008 French Derby winner has a skin infection on a hind leg and will only start if he passes an examination.

Libaud said on Saturday: "I don't know if he can run tomorrow. The vets from the Hong Kong Jockey Club saw him and they will decide tomorrow if he can run or not. The problem is an infection in a hind leg.

"Yesterday [Friday] he galloped on the track on the grass and we had no problem with him. The day before was the same, but this morning when we opened his box we saw there was a problem.

"Maybe it's not a big problem but at the moment I don't know. The x-ray showed no problem, nor the scan, but it could be a problem with the skin."

The trainer's wife Vicky said the horse would be regularly monitored and would probably take his chance if the vets are satisfied with the horse's condition in the morning.

"The horse has been in great form and looks great but he was lame this morning and has this infection problem," she said. "It's a problem with the right hind, which is a white foot. They have already looked at the foot and can't see anything. They are going to do an x-ray of the foot to make sure there is not an abscess in formation."

The Hong Kong Jockey Club said the stewards had been advised of the problem. A statement from chief stipendiary steward Kim Kelly said the colt "has been found to have slight swelling to the right hind fetlock but at this time the horse is suitable to race.

"Vision D'Etat will be subjected to a veterinary examination tomorrow morning at which time a final determination will be made as to the horse's suitability to compete in tomorrow's race."

Swelling on the right hind fetlock ? Skin Infection ? Lame ? I know nothing when it comes to horse injurys. Could someone with more knowldege give some feedback on this ? Is this one of those little things not to worry about. i.e without being controversial like one of those Aiden o brien injury reports in the run up close to a race. I use that just as an example where they then run anyway and perform. Or is this a case now of steering well clear of this horse for this race ? He will certainly be a good price on the tote with this kind of statement you would think and id hate to miss out should he run and perform. Hmmm what to do. ANy help is appreciated. Cheers.

Don't know if it's too late but for what it's worth its a bit hard to work out exactly what problem is!  they talk about skin infection but equally talk about swelling near a joint which wouldn't apply to a skin infection.  the fact they have xrayed and scanned suggests they are not sure either.  but if a horse is lame with swelling around a joint the morning after a gallop, i would be concerned.  having said that if the horse is allowed to run and you think there is value i wouldn't want to be the one to stop you winning!!

Nice. Just got up to see Vision Detat did the business. Easy in the end. Glad i went for my main bet on him as always planned. Thanks Cath...I just backed him on the basis he wouldnt run if he really wasnt ok. Was abit nervous though. Price was there though. Sakred kingdom an easy winner too really. Different class the far eastern sprinters.
lenahan

Just been watching the replays. Darykana and Vison D'etat were both very impressive. Both with a good turn of foot. Should be ones to keep an eye out for again next season. I think Vision D'etat is underated a little on these shores. Id expect him to pick up some of the big 10F races next summer if he comes over again and id be happy to take on RipVanWinkle with him at Ascot or wherever. 9 wins from 13 runs. Most at G1 level. Only unplaced twice which was in both Arcs. A model of consistency, very tough and genuine. 10F is his ideal trip. He is a horse i really like. Darykana is going to be very interesting to keep an eye out for next year. I think she won a good race quite cosily today.
