The 3yo Betfair Sprint at York today is one of the most competitive handicaps of the season. The winner of the race usually turns out to be a class horse so it makes sense to look for something that is lightly raced, unexposed, and who looks likely to be tackling group races before long. There are several interesting types, but the one to stand out is Michael Jarvis' Ancien Regime.
He won really well in a hot race last time at Newmarket and was far more superior than the winning margin suggests. He travelled well that day and went readily clear only to show signs of inexperience when in front by dossing and drifting towards the rail. When he got to the rail he visibly quickened again to win with something to spare. He has been hit by the handicapper but I'm not sure that will stop him, and he can show why he was thought promising enough to be given a Golden Jubilee entry by his trainer. I suggest backing him with Paddy Power at 9/2 as they will refund losing win singles on any horse that finishes second.
Fathsta is an admirable sort who keeps improving but probably lacks the out and out class to take this. Hamish McGonagall is feared most. However, I think it will take a very good one to beat the selection and he looks nailed on to run a big race.
