I'm not usually a fan of betting in 2yo races, and definitely not 2yo handicaps, but I'll make an exception today. The 16 runner nursery at Newbury may look daunting but I think it will be dominated by the two horses at the top of the market who fought out a close finish over C&D last month: Definightly and Nasri. The two of them pulled 5l clear of the rest and the form of that race has worked out fantstically well. I wouldn't be surprised if these two went on to be better than handicappers and I expect them to have the race between themselves again today. I prefer Definightly as not only was he having only his second career start that day (Nasri his third), but he also seemed to improve next time when a wide margin winner, clocking a fast time, at Lingfield. WIth 16 runners and 4 places he is well worth a heavy each way bet ('to nothing'). Obviously it will be annoying if there is a non runner or two but I'm prepared to take the risk as I can't have him out of the first three either. It's also worth doing a reverse forecast with Nasri because, as I have said, I think these two are by far the two best treated horses in the race today.
As expected Nasri and Definightly dominated proceedings. Just a shame they couldn't have finished the other way around. Never mind, still got the stake back on Definightly and a healthy profit on the forecast.
I think it will be well worth following these two and the two that finished close behind (front 4 pulled nicely clear) as it felt like a really good race and I'd expect all of the main players today to win more races. The time looks good as well. I was especially impressed with the winner Nasri who I think had a fair bit in hand. He looks like he ideally wants a seventh furlong. Even though he'll still only be rated in the low 90s after he is reasessed, I think he'll be making his mark in group company over 7f (maybe even a mile) before long.
