The Punter: Smith’s punt for Elusive million
Wednesday, 28 October 2009
One person won’t have been too happy at the performance of St Nicholas Abbey last Saturday.
English punter Richard Smith, who has been involved with a number of stables down the years, has pitched in with a bet to win £1m.
But part of that involves John Dunlop’s Elusive Pimpernel winning the 2000 Guineas and Derby double.
The Pimpernel was second behind St Nicholas at Doncaster and while Dunlop thinks a lot of his fellow, he knows he was beaten by something special.
However, there is nothing to say that Elusive can’t emerge victorious in the Classics but his hopes have certainly taken a knock after he was beaten three and three-quarter lengths.
Smith has coupled that part of the bet with Notre Pere to land the Gold Cup and Grand National which in itself, would be some achievement.
He has been given odds of 16,280-1 on the four races and his stake is £62 to win the maximum of £1m.
John Dunlop’s charge is available at 16-1 to prevail in next year’s 2000 Guineas, and 20-1 to capture the famous Epsom Classic, while Notre Pere is Ireland’s leading Gold Cup challenger at 10-1, and a 25-1 chance to win at Aintree.
David Hood, spokesman for William Hill, said: “This is one of the most bizarre and ambitious bets I’ve laid during my career at Hills.
“Our man formerly worked in racing so is clearly a shrewd judge of horses, but he may have a bright future in clairvoyance if he takes us to the cleaners with this bet!’’
The bet: 80-1 Elusive Pimpernel 2000 Guineas & Derby double and 200-1 Notre Pere Gold Cup & Grand National double. Odds 16,280-1. Stake £62. Payout £1m.

Why is this news?
It's just a bet with a big payout that the man has no chance of collecting.

I agree it is speculative but it is news. It would be interesting to see which pair of races, if any, Forum users think is harder to predict.
With the horses mentioned I think the NH part of the bet will be hardest to achieve.

wait a minute - he's only getting 200-1 for the Gold Cup / National double !!!!
A guineas and derby double is, I agree, some feat, but it does get done with a bit more regularity than the NH equivalent.
The last horse to land the NH double was Golden Miller in 1934
'our man formerly worked in racing so is a shrewd judge'
Is that bookie speak for 'what a mug, hes only accepted 200-1 on what should be at least a 500-1 bet !!!!

Bencar......Nice interpretation.
Much of this will be Hills after free publicity.

I would say it's odds against that his horses even run in those races.

Still, it would be some fairy story. Would need quite a few of the competition to come out to even have a chance

Well, yes.. can't see Cheltenham having the right ground for Notre Pere.

I don't see why this ever made the news people do £1 E/W Lucky 15's ever week with 4 33/1 shots in them which would payout over a million If the bookies allow that amount but they would not get printed.
