Would it be normal.........for a solicitor to not accept a credit card as payment?
|

it isnt abnormal
many firms (usually the larger ones and the very small ones, interstingly) do; a lot of medium sized firms don't
no hard and fast rule.

Thanks for that.
We are finally moving house next week, and the money needs to have cleared with them a week today by completion. Doesn't give me a lot of time to get some money in place.

Do you mean the money for the house or the money for there bill because a credit card would be a strange way to buy a house and if it is there bill I cannot see why It has to be cleared before the house goes through as there bill is a totally seperate Issue.

most firms send a completion statement beforehand which includes the bill, so they are in funds and get paid at completion.

But surely the last work to be done is the completion which is part of the bill so legally the person paying for that work has without Interest charges 30 days to pay for it

depends on the terms of business
Ours for conveyancing say pay up before completion on a purchase, fees are usually set in advance and part of the total funds required for the purchase
We take the bill money out of proceeds on a sale.
not uncommon, and no law says you have to give anyone 30 days credit for anything

and no law says you have to give anyone 30 days credit for anything
You are not actually giving credit the person is paying you for the work

Not an obligation to wait for 30 days but as far as I am aware no charge or forcement of payment can be made on any company or Indivdual within 30 days of that work being carried out with any sort of charge being Incurred being financial or other.
I.e If a plumber or Electrician comes around your house to do work he cannot demand you pay when he has finished or add charges to your Invoice until 30 days after the work has been carried out so effectively you have 30 days to pay freely.
I always thought this was a written rule or is it a case of
THEM AND US

no, it is always a matter of the terms between the parties
if the plumber says he is coming round and he requires payment at the time the job is complete then thats when i have to pay him
in a restaurant you pay imediately.
the lawyer is making sure that when he completes the work he has sufficient funds to be paid, thats all he's doing./ most people wont come and pay teh lawyers bill on the day they are moving in....in the very old days the lawyers used to hold the keys and then people had to pay to move in but no longer.

I did not know that, mind you a plumber who worked on those terms would not get much work.

I know this one.
Not by law you don't you only have to pay for Alcohol, for food you only have to leave your name and address which applys to Hotels as well they cannot demand payment on checkout If you suply them with your details then they have to accept that.

Is that right? It's not the done thing though is it.... what would you do if some one did it to you in your restaurant? Would you just agree to it then go to all the trouble if invoicing them?
It's like being able to pay for things with stamps as they are legal tender.... but if you tried to do it people would think you were mad.

If they did do it there is not much legally you could do the only thing would be If you really wanted to is to check with the police they were giving there correct details.
If however they refused to pay for any alcohol they had consumed then you could actually call the police out as it is now Illegal to give alcohol on credit thats why NO pubs should run tabs anymore because effectively it is an Instant revoke of license If a landlord does this

in any event,
a solicitor will not (unless they are aft, or you are a reguular client) usually complete a house purchase unless they are in sufficient funds to complete teh tranaction including all costs and stamp duty if payable.
Most tradesmen i deal with are expecting payment on teh day unless they are repeat providers of a service
i have never tried leaving my name and address at a restaurant or a shop and said send the bill on i will pay in a month
i suspect i might find the response short and sharp

Thanks all. It makes sense, I was just surprised at the speed of which I needed to find 3 grand.
Anyway, I am off to McDonalds to order everything on the menu and give a false address.
