Hi Lenahan and Chris

I didnt follow Mum but i did remind her twice to go for it as anything can happen. She didnt doubt his ability which is why he is one of her favs, it was more the fact of 40 horses tackling those huge fences and like with driving, its not always youre fault, its others in the way who cause you to bump

My Sister took Black apalachi who i must say thought ran brilliantly to lead all that way, so well done to him

If i was riding in that (perish the thought!) i would much rather be up front with a clear view of my fences than jumping them blind, gives most of the horses no chance to get their footing in the right place

Balding apologises for Treadwell teeth comment

CLARE BALDING has apologised to Liam Treadwell over the comment she made about his teeth when interviewing the 23-year-old rider following his Grand National triumph on Saturday.

Not least of Treadwell's impressive accomplishments at Aintree was how, in front of a TV audience of millions, he retained his poise in response to the implied criticism of his appearance, but viewers were quick to object and many posted complaints on internet forums and chatrooms, while others contacted the BBC switchboard to register their protest.

Balding asked Treadwell to bare his teeth to the camera, supposedly to show the perils that a jump jockey faces. When he did so, thepresenter blurted out that he "could afford to have them seen to now".

The BBC would not say how many complaints it received, but Balding was on Sunday taken to task by her bosses over the remark before fronting the Corporation's coverage of the Rugby League Challenge Cup clash between Leeds and St Helens.

I'm sure that spoiled a lot of peoples national never mind the 100/1 winner

He was still travelling strongly too before unseating his jockey.

Yet again this great race throws up another "what if story"

Im sure the horse will be back next year, but  maybe 2009 was his best chance.

I watched the race with a mate and said to her during the parade that Mon Mome was overpriced, as he would surely plod round at the back and perhaps stay into 5th place or something. So I'm glad someone on the board backed him!

Absolutely bounded up the run-in, didn't he. Shame so many others finished distressed though.

Terrible National for me (and for 99% of other punters) with only SOP getting me any money back.  Even worse was that i'd backed Mon Mome last year but couldn't see him featuring this year.

More importantly than my depleted finances though, I think Aintree really need to look at the preliminaries and the starting process.  3 horses collapsing at the end of the race, sadly one fatally, and a number of others finishing distressed.  I know it was a warm day for the time of year but the extended preliminaries and 2 false starts mean that some horses are overheating/becoming dehydrated before they have even gone a yard.  I don't think it's good enough.

Couldn't agree more, Andy.

It looked a complete farce and unnecessary. What's the tape all about? Is it imperative they use it for the National - it only seems to cause problems IMO. As long as the majority of the field are in a line and parallel with the starter, let them go.

My stress levels were through the roof (had images of 93' flooding back), so who knows what the horses were going through.

I must be in a minority.
I thought it was one of the best Nationals for a while.
I dont think i have seen so many horses in contention with 2 to 3 fences to go. Also dont think there were too many hard luck stories with a few of the fancied horses all being in contention at some stage or other.
Do think they have to do something about the start as it did get perilously close to a 93 situation.

The aim of the tape is to have the horses lined up in a decent line so everyone jumps off together.

The first recall was due to the starter not being happy with the line they were making  & maybe could of been avoided.

The second false start was clearly down to a few jockeys either not hearing the starter or ignoring him which is not allowed.

It will never be perfect with so many runners & a lot of background noise from the crowd & also helicopters above them.

What was good was the starter made them sure who was in charge & that they would only go when he was happy!

MT Jnr,

Don't get me wrong it was an exciting race but financially it was pretty grim for me.

They have to do something about these starts though.  I accept that you can get false starts in any race but for the Grand National when the horses have such a long build up it is more important than ever to get them away first time, especially on a warm day like Saturday.  I remember a couple of years ago (2007 I think) they had a couple of false starts and again horses were finishing distressed.  I think that was the year that Graphic Approach collapsed when loose and later died.  Again, it was a very warm day but if they can get the horses off first time/and or reduce the amount of time spent on the build-up, it can only help avoid horses overheating/dehydrating.

I think it's pretty obvious what the aim of the tape is for, I just question whether it's absolutely essential or not. I think they can do without it personally. It causes more problems than it needs to. Who cares if one horse starts 2 yards in front of everything else over the trip they go . . .

There may be a rule that the start can only operate with a tape start not not a flag start. That maybe down to the sheer numbers of horses running!

The main point is that they all are required to start in some sort of line as should happen in almost every other NH race but rarely seems to happen these days.

the jockeys, obviously, or they wouldn't all be trying to get a jump on the start!

The jockeys are told what to do before the race and they should do it.  There was an article somewhere yesterday talking about how important the first few fences are, and being in front - whether it's so your horse can see clearly what's coming or so you can tack over to the inside as soon as possible.

There were some cracking quotes from the jockeys. I particularly liked Barry Geraghty - "that was a bit of an anti-climax".

Might be worth noting that James Reveley said Rambling Minster "didn't take to it".
