forum.sports-pro.co.uk A discussion forum devoted to people who want to talk about sports and sports betting! People without a sense of humour need not apply!!
The problem is that (a) the team description has to be short so that commentators can say it easily, and (b) Team UK might possibly offend some Scots, Welsh and Northern Irish, for all sorts of reasons we won't go in to.....
Team GB seems the best compromise as between political correctness, not offending anyone and being easy to recognise and say.
Geordie, there are surely more important things in life (like how well Team GB did today, for example?? And what storming performances by others we have seen, including the Romanians in the women's sculls, Usain Bolt, that excellent Ukrainian heptathlete, another gold for that American swimmer and so on). Come on Geordie - don't nit pick for the sake of it!
I bet no commentators would be pleased to have to say "And that's another medal for Team United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland".
I'm getting a bit annoyed with all this "Super Saturday!!!- Team GB have strong gold medal prospects in 547 events!!" overload. Do they EVER learn from our long sporting history of excessive hype followed by crushing disappointment? By the end of the weekend we'll probably have 1 bronze in something random and unexpected, and the Beeb presenters will have to get excited about that.
Extremely happy to be proved totally wrong! Much better to be an eternal pessimist where British sport is concerned though- you can only ever be pleasantly surprised....
Glad to see someone else agrees that Michael Johnson is really excellent. Colin Jackson is also good, but it's nice to have a non-British perspective on the events. I always find Gaby Logan very wooden and unengaging though. _________________ Known as the catch of the camp.
Glad to see that the papers have pointed out that we are performing well due to funding from the Lottery. This is your return if you have paid into the Lottery! And for that we can thank John Major who pushed the idea of the Lottery through. Now he can say he did something good while PM (Apart from getting the parties in N.I. to sit down & talk). _________________ SBH Comp 2008 - Runner Up

I like Johnson too. Goodness knows how the BBC got him! Must of waved a few hundred dollars in his face! $$$
I do sometimes think that he finds Sue's & Gabby's style of presenting a bit gushy! _________________ SBH Comp 2008 - Runner Up
Agree with Tags that Michael Johnson is excellent, and Colin Jackson also. I'm not quite sure which presenter Gaby Logan is - all the women are blonde and OK looking although you can spot Sharon Davies by the fact she is usually by a swimming pool, and I do recognise Balding from elsewhere!
I suppose Logan is the one that isn't Sue Barker or another one I don't know......
I think that the Beeb have done a storming job with coverage. My only (minor) criticism is the "in your face" interview when people are exhausted/devastated/in tears. Yes, let us see what it is like to give everything and win/lose - but don't rub our faces (or the interviewees' faces) in it.
Of the specialist commentators, I think the following (not in rank order) are very good:
John Inverdale
Steve Redgrave
Dan Topolski
The boxing team
The swimming team
The equestrian team (especially Jennie Loriston-Clarke for dressage)
Hugh Porter (cycling - didn't know he was married to Anita Lonsborough!)
Michael Johnson
Colin Jackson
Jonathan Edwards
I can't stand
The Gary bloke in the rowing who makes the first 100 metres sound like the finish and only has one tone - shout - anyway
The sailing bloke out in the boat ditto
Other than that, they are all reasonably good, and some are excellent.

Most draw on their background i.e. Redgrave & is a worthy addition to the BBC. Although he can be too clever at times!
I loved the bit between him & Pinsett looking back on how they prepared for their events in past Games.
The guy who shouts in the Rowing was the cox in the 4's when Redgrave won one of his medals. _________________ SBH Comp 2008 - Runner Up
Forgot to mention Brendan Foster and Steve Cram - both good. Although when they showed Foster in his headset the other day I was slightly alarmed at how swollen his face looked! Maybe headsets don't suit him. If the Gary bloke was a cox, I suppose shout is his usual communication mode - although I thought they had microphones these days...
Did I really hear Claire Balding call the main stadium the Birds Mess Stadium over the weekend!
She may well have done - known for her dry humour, so it could even have been deliberate!! But I was disappointed to hear her use "medalling", along with the other illiterates. As she has a first (I think) in English from Cambridge, she should know better!
She seems to have disappeared - back to Hong Kong for the show-jumping?

I like to add Barry Davies to your list.
Used to be a football comentor but he fell out with the Beeb over some event (either F.A. Cup or World Cup!) & has refused to do football since but he brings the same style of commentry to other sports (Used for Wimbledon). He's being doing the hockey out there. _________________ SBH Comp 2008 - Runner Up
