Brain wasn't in gear - that 's probably not today    But they do look friendly!

So chuffed that Denman looked SO WELL - I'll calm down soon

Still haven't seen the race but as far as I am concerned, unless we get a new kid on the block next year, and these two are still performing well, the only to split them will be the ground.

Thought it was much more lively this time round which helped KS more than the dead ground helped Denman last time.

I thought KS was regressing but boy does it sound like he proved his doubters wrong today.  Really pleased for the horse and for Denman too as sounds as if he ran a blinder with his massively interrupted prep.

Sounds like it was a classic.

before we get too carried away and regard KS as the 2nd coming,he beat a horse who had an interrupted preperation to say the least who was eased off when his chance had gone and a horse(ED) who hasnt got to within touching distance of him in all the other races hes ran against him.Not taking anything away from him but he only had to show the same level of form as his KG win and i dont think he has hit any new heights in his ability.Cooldine will whip him next year and if anybody wants a match for £100 then im ur man.

Yes, I'm sure a lot of people are going to jump at that.

Get real.

Whose the govenor now! kauto is saying to denman in the caption.

Paul Nicholls = most privelaged man in racing!

I don't think privileged is the correct adjective insomuch as you make your own luck and if PN was not so damn good he would not be given the horses to train!Privileged is Rose Davidson (as was) or the useless Magnier boy NOT the excellent Paul Nicholls the son of a policeman.

No, it is the correct one, if the OP means it as I think; just as some people will regard it as a privilege to have witnessed the race yesterday, Nicholls would no doubt feel privileged to train three of the greatest chasers in the last 100 years. In that sense, the meaning is " a source of pleasure".

The Dobbins and Magniers enjoy a different sort of privilege, that afforded the rich.

The closer the race got the more confident I was that Kauto star would win & what a performance.

On another note will folk now realise that Exotic Dancer will never beat Kauto Star. The only time he's finished in front of him was when Kauto Star unshipped Sam Thomas at Haydock!

The pace of the race really suited Kauto yesterday. If Denman is back to his best next year and there is a really searching gallop then I think it'll be a different result. I still think that Cheltenham isn't the best course for him as he has so much speed but his class just shone yesterday. Great horse and good to see Ruby acknowledging him as the best he's ever ridden. It annoys me to see the handicapper overreacting to a horse like Masterminded and putting him on 186 for just one run! Kauto should be at least 185 and Masterminded in the low 180's. Its not often you see a horse with the pace to win a Tingle Creek and the stamina and guts to win a Gold Cup - not the best since Arkle (that would be Desert Orchid) but a helluva good horse.

KK and Chewster

I recorded it and watched the races last night.

Wow.  Never seen the horse jump with so much enthusiasm!  Brilliant to see him do that, and thought Denman ran a corker too.

That was some race!

Well done Kauto Star great perfprmance in a race run to suit.

So happy to see Denman run well which made my day as Sam was told to hold back on him cause of his problems so next year hopefully all will be well and maybe Cooldine and Barbers Shop will be there too to see the best Gold Cup in years.

There's a couple of comments I'd like to add, a bit late I know (just got back from Hereford!)

First, I got a great place by the pre-parade, so I could get a decent look at them all. I thought Denman was much improved in condition as compared to the reports from Kempton - and the only thing I could crab him on was that he didn't appear to walk out very freely; but the pre-parade is quite small and lack of room might be the explanation. Kauto on the other hand did walk out decently and looked very "loose and lean". If they go carefully with him I think Denman will improve on yesterday's performance, which means a cracking Gold Cup in 2010!

I thought Madison du Berlais the best looking horse of the bunch but that didn't do him much good on the day! Halcon Genelardais looked poor (he does have a very badly set-on neck, but he didn't look fit enough).

I was mightily pleased to see Denman run so well; considering that according to Finlay they were thinking of withdrawing him two weeks ago he has clearly improved by leaps and bounds. It was interesting that connections "confessed" that they had told Thomas not to be too hard on him. In fact, Kauto leading as well as he did in the closing stages must have resolved a "jockey's dilemma" of the first water. If Denman had got into a battle with Kauto, would Thomas have ignored the (presumed) instructions, and gone for the win as the rule book dictates?

I thought Kauto deserved every bit of the praise he got and more. I cannot praise his performance highly enough. He pinged his fences, never looked like making a mistake never mind falling, he kept a good pace and clearly has both speed and stamina in plenty - wonderful!

All praise to all the connections involved, including Nicholls, who seems really to have done the business this time, and the team who produced two of the finest horses we will be privileged to see (much credit to grooms and so on, but I won't continue because it will begin to sound like an Oscar's speech   !)
