I know we've had best films etc threads before but this is not about your favourite films. Just films, old or new, that you've seen recently(similar to the TV thread I suppose).

I went to see W tonight. It's enjoyable enough. Not bad but not great. Considering it's directed by Oliver Stone, it's, on the whole, suprising sympathetic to Dubya. It's critical at times but I was suspecting it to be an absolute onslaught against him and was pleasantly suprised when it wasn't(I have my issues with Bush but if I go and see a political biopic I want it to be balanced and fair. For the most part it was). It could have been a bit longer in honesty but on the whole I enjoyed it. I'd give it 7/10

Saw 'Network' the other week for the first time. Really liked it and would recommend it

With Christmas coming, I hope that the original Christmas Carol is shown, the one with Alistair Sim, Brilliant, but I like to watch it on my own.

Loads recently, my favourites are supernatural/ghost stories I quite like the spanish and husband likes italian so we mix and match.
Rcently seen.
The Orphanage. atmospheric, creepy and well acted by all especially the actress that plays the mother one of the best and creepiest scenes involves a medium well played by Geraldine Chaplin, bad news is that it is being remade for the american audience probably with the buffy woman or some other incompetant, really not neccessary.
"Pan's Labyrinth" director Guillermo del Toro is executive producer.

The Mist. Based on a Stephen King novella, starts with a storm and an everyday scene at the supermarket turns sinister when a mist descends trapping the people inside. Outside waits some nasty horror, while inside gets no better with a religious zealot scarily well played by Marcia Gay Harden stirring up the townsfolk and turning them against each other.
I thought the ending was good it's a bit of an "Oh no what rotten luck" moment that I sort of saw coming, but I still enjoyed the film overall.

Room 1408 another Stephen King. stars John Cussack and brilliant Samuel L Jackson who predictably steals every scene. The film centres around The Dophin Hotel and the room of the title. the character played by John Cussack debunks ghost stories so tell him the room is evil and advise him not to go there he's so going to take up the challenge isn't he? Well evil is an understatement, as he soon finds out. I enjoyed the film but O/H wasn't so impresssed he said it started like it was going to be great but something was lacking, like all the elements were there to make a good story but the material was wasted.

Thanks for this thread jimbob, sadly O/H has just lost his job so DVDs will be the bulk of our entertainment for the time being, so I will add a few more as I watch and look forward to hearing about other recommends.

I read about The Mist and decided that all I needed to do was watching the ending (which is on Youtube)

I loathed Dirty Dancing at first (but then I shared a house at college with two girls who could watch it all day every day) but now I watch it whenever it's on and love it.

Men In Black.

Hope they show It's A Wonderful Life over Christmas - but also that they show The Nightmare Before Christmas which is full of great sing-a-long tunes.

Just been on imdb.com and I see there's a movie coming out called "Frost/Nixon", which apparently based around interviews made by David Frost with a post Watergate Nixon.

Michael Sheen of all people plays Sir David Frost, got a lot of good reviews and appears to have been adapted from a play, anyone seen this?

Seven, with Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman... Brilliant.
Training Day is also a great film with pleanty of twists and turns.

I've watched a lot of films in the past month or so, some of my favourites:

Ghost Town - Ricky Gervais hits Holllywood, Brilliant
REC - Spanish horror film, wow.
Mr Smith Goes to Washington - Classic.
Elf - Forced to watch this with the Mrs. Very surprised. Top class Xmas fun.

Also recently saw Road to Perdition, Resevoir Dogs and City of God, all of which are definitely worth a watch (especially if you are a bloke).

The best film I've seen this year is Distant Voices/Still Lives. It's an old film but Genesis in Whitechapel gave it a screening. Directed by Terence Davies with Pete Postlethwaite contributing a career defining performance as the violent father/husband.The 1988 piece is truly magnificent cinema and I'd recommend it to anyone.

It may prove quite hard to get hold of but it's worth the effort. See it if you can!
