I was in Best Mate Tuesday and Wednesday and it was fine - and I don't count myself as a know-nothing, idiot or chav - AND I was smoking a big cigar (but NOT wearing a pink tie..... )

Really good view of the course as well, as Yaiyam says. I enjoyed it, and I will be going in Tatts on Friday because Best Mate was sold out - so I will report on the contrast!

Lol I obviously was generalising but it was genuinely horrible and did ruin my day quite a bit.

Some , went "you ****ing ," to Tatenen as he ran past us after falling; someone had shat themself and left their minging boxers in a toilet cubicle, and I just felt completely stuck out of the way and not a part of the Festival at all.

Ah well, lesson learnt, and it's all about opinions of course.

To be honest, that's why I don't much enjoy going to the Festival whichever side I go.

Too many people are there to drink and bet and know nothing about the sport at all. I hate seeing a horse fall; I hate it even more when I can here someone cursing it or worse, cheering when it happens.

I only go to see the horses so when I went to the Best Mate I found it pointless - and I couldn't see the finish either, probably because I'm not particularly tall and not about to shove myself into a sweaty crowd.

I was in the Best Mate yesterday, as I have been when I've gone on New Years' Day the last couple of years. Yes there's one or two idiots about but nothing that would put me off going back. I was in the Guinness Village at last year's Festival and the view from the Best Mate is far superior.

Can't compare it to the Tatts (surely there's a few idiots there too?) but I imagine next year I'll be in the Best Mate again as I'd rather have the extra cash to have a bet rather than swapping one side of the track for the other.

I was in Club yesterday and found that pretty good. The atmosphere was cracking but I'd be interested to see what the Best Mate Enclosure is like.

There sure are! I went in Tatts on Friday (Best Mate sold out and I was trying to cut down on expenses!) There weren't just a few idiots, it was full of them. I mostly couldn't even hear the commentary because of groups yelling and chanting the entire time (why do people do that? It seems pretty pointless.....) The place was packed, I could hardly move, and a large proportion of the crowd were off their faces. What is the point? I thought, swearing that next year I would either do Best Mate (cheap(ish) and cheerful as far as I could make out) or Club and endure the braying and stupidity of the corporate classes. But not Tatts. Ever again!

But I suppose, like a lot of big events, no part of the venue is going to please all the people all the time!

Ideally I would like a box, with a panoramic view of the course, which would provide unlimited champagne, whiskey and claret as well as a first class three course lunch, would be available only to a select group of friends, would have exchange, bookie and Tote facilities, and a security escort for when I wanted to visit the parade ring/unsaddling enclosure, to ensure that I got a good place on the viewing steps. But I guess you have to be the Queen to do that......

Yes, KK, the problem with the viewing part of Tatts is that it is about 70% smaller than you expect looking at the stands as a whole, so although it gives access to the parade ring and pre-parade, which is nice, there are always far too many people trying to cram into far too small a space on the viewing side of the stands. I was very surprised at that, but I suppose the "thinking" is that they can cram people in because a fairly large proportion will not in any case actually want to watch the racing!

Trouble is, if they try, the whole place is so packed it is impossible. Never again, for me, I thought it was very poor value.

I'd love to go to Cheltenham but I've never been - festival or any other meeting - it's mainly the travelling from oop 'ere that stops me.  I'd be worried that I couldn't get back in front of a TV for the first race the following day.

If I ever got sorted out enough to go for the 4 days I always thought I'd love it!  But reading this through I'm not so sure.  It sounds too manic!!  Even at York on John Smiths Cup Day you can find a quiet spot if you want a breather!

The part of the course where the finishing horses walk back past the crowd to the Winners Enclosure looks to be somewhere I'd love to be!  (Though must be hard to get a good spot.)  Is that Tatts?

I've enjoyed the reports from the course though so thanks to everyone

Well it's both Tatts and Club I think, really. The horses go past Tatts, then past the Club lawn and then turn in to the winners' enclosure.

Yes, it is a bit manic, and if it weren't such high quality racing I probably wouldn't go. Cheltenham is really much more supportable on non-Festival meetings eg the Paddy Power, which is popular but not lunatic! If you're not keen on crowds and scrums, then another Cheltenham meeting might be the answer. But it is expensive for people who have to travel a distance and possibly also stay the night.
