vicky the cross country train from cheltenham spa to york and of course vice versa is fine; I have done it from newcastle and whlst you tend to have an issue with seating first stages of the jouney back it is fine and do not let that put you off
as for tatts v best mate... take your pick I reckon. I paid a bit extra for a seat in the guimness stand last year and thought it well worth it _________________ Geordie_R

Have you done the train there and back in a day?? That would be worth thinking about! _________________ Cocktails may not be the answer.... but they help you forget the question Vodka... Cheaper than B otox and paralyses more muscles!

If you want to try it, I'd suggest coming down for a day of the November meeting. There's always a cracking atmosphere and it'll give you a chance to scout out the course before it's so crowded you can't see anything!
Cheltenham is really much more supportable on non-Festival meetings eg the Paddy Power, which is popular but not lunatic! If you're not keen on crowds and scrums, then another Cheltenham meeting might be the answer. .
Same here - go to Cheltenham when it isn't manic and overcrowded, then decide whether you are prepared to bear with manic and overcrowded for the Festival.
Thanks Jenny and Rowan - November seems a long way-a-way - But I'll think about that! _________________ Cocktails may not be the answer.... but they help you forget the question Vodka... Cheaper than B otox and paralyses more muscles!
Or hunter chase meeting in May - but that's evening too and would probably mean an overnight if arriving from any distance - I can't see anyone getting back to York from Cheltenham that late, but then I don't know how good the train service is.
I am thinking of going to the April meeting (2 days, not the evening unless the card is very tempting). I'd be happy to meet Vicky on one of the days for a carefully guided tour of all the best places.......

yes I hvae, from Newcastle, so you would save an hour each way on me
by the time you get past Birmingham on the way back there's always a seat free and you can have a snooze if it has got to much for you
i agree, try the november meeting as a run out...we did it by car one year [stayed 2 nights] and by rail [ditto] and the following year just the friday with an early start and back that night
to be honest staying over is more exhausting
